Am I overthinking the problem of motorhome laden weight and trailer weight?

At the moment we tow a trailer with a smart car behind the Autotrail Scout but I want to buy a larger trailer to carry a Suzuki Jimny just can't work out whether I would be within the legal towing weight, etc. Any thoughts or experience ????

How long is a piece of string?
How heavy is the new outfit compared to the last, what's it say on your vin plate,
All there is to it really.

What are the numbers on the VIN plate , that will tell you what you need to know :)

This is ours and the GTW is 6500kgs.
That is Gross Train Weight when towing, a visit to the weighbridge May be needed.

Nice pic , what is your current gvw ie how close are you to the mam of 5250kg ?

Just realised not the oe posters vehicle vin plate . going by the above plate if at gvm you only have a train weight that allows a 1250kg trailed load a jimny min kerb weight is approx 1090kg so not doable unless trailer is made of candy floss. :) so would need to run at reduced gvw on prime mover .

It’s your train weight that matters, this determines how much you can tow.

The data on the current Autotrail Frontier Scout is here:

I think that suggests the total max gross weight is 4500kg, max train weight is 6000kg and tow limit is 1500kg. So there's no shared capacity, it's 1500kg towable regardless... although Camshaft might have a different/older model.

AND your normal touring total weight it is guesswork

That figue is not relevant. As has been said on your VIN plate it will state what the motorhome gross weight is and what the max train weight is. Subtract one from the other and you have max weight you can tow.

We tow a trailer behind our PVC, PVC gross weieght = 3500kg, max train weight = 6000kg, means we can tow up to 2500kg.. all the info is also on V5 doc.

But if, for example, your plate said your Tow capacity is 2700kg, you could tow more, but you'd have 200kg less payload. Sometimes the max Train weight is less than Gross + Tow.

Would not want to argue that with a VOSA or police at the side of the road. They will just look at the VIN plate or V5, then at the trailer plated weight. All in order on you go, if not...........:)

Nobody has mentioned strain on the towing vehicle yet, if its a 2.3 or maybe even smaller towing a 1000kgs jeep on a trailer that is likely to be at least 500kgs sounds like a recipe for clutch wear to me.
