Glynn’s mum was diagnosed with dementia a year ago and it has been frightening to see the speed at which she is losing the ability to take care of herself. She receives excellent support from local services but more needs to be done to find the cause or possible prevention of this cruel disease. We have decided to commit to riding 1610 kms (1000 miles) for the Cycling Down Dementia campaign between November and January to try and raise essential funding for vital research. If any of you feel able to donate to help us to raise at least £500 it would be greatly appreciated. Let’s hope it doesn’t rain to much here in Spain this winter as we’ll need to cycle at least 120 kms every week for 3 months!! We got off to a good start today with our first ride and managed a very tidy 100.40 kms!! (y)

Good luck with your ride and raising money for Alzheimers I hope I don't upset anyone my wife has had it 4 years in the last 3 days she cannot swallow and we are in the last stage a matter of days writing this crying my eyes out its a terrible disease we have left money in both of our wills sorry about your wifes mom and all the best john

Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear that. It’s such a cruel cruel disease. My heart goes out to you both. Thank you for highlighting one of the sides of this disease that people don’t see as many think of it just as a loss of memory but it is so much more than that. Sending you big hugs and lots of love xx

My heart is with you both IV just got upset reading this as iv recently lost my mum to this awful disease.
It’s much much more than people realise but unfortunatly until you have dealt with it you don’t know full extent.
The brain is the most functional organ we rely on yet they don’t know enough about it, this has to change.
Thinking of you

Always happy to help a good cause..
Good luck with the fundraising..

And hope all coping or who have lost loved ones to this cruel disease find strength...
Andy.

Sorry to hear that, it’s frightening how common this terrible disease has become. There seems to be so few people that haven’t been affected in some way.

Thank you very much Andy, Glynn has now passed his £500 target so it looks like he’ll have to up it. Much appreciated x

jonsea I’m so sorry to hear about your wife. Please make sure you have support for yourself during this incredibly difficult time.
Coolbeanz , happy to support your fundraising and again, sorry to hear about Glynn’s mum.
Bailey 15 , sad to hear you’ve lost your mother recently to this awful disease. Research is the only way forward to hopefully find preventative treatment one day.

Anyone who shops with Amazon—- you can swap to Smile Amazon and nominate a charity, Alzheimer’s Research UK being one. Each time you shop a small amount goes to your charity.

Good luck with your fundraising. Repeating a previous poster, happy to help a good cause.

Regards

Phil.

Another brilliant ride today. 66 kms on a round trip from Torre de la Horadada to Los Montesinos. Glynn said he wanted to get the challenge off to a strong start by doing a 160 kms (100 mls) by the end of the weekend so does that mean I get a day off tomorrow as we have already cycled 166 kms (103 mls) in the last 2 days?? I'm a bit old for all this exertion :cycle::rofl::rofl:

Good luck with the fundraising...... happy to support your efforts

Phill

Thank you Carol, it really is appreciated. He already raised his target to £600 and now he may have to think again as he’s reached £582 already thanks to so many kind donations. Xx

jonsea , heartbreaking position you are in, thoughts and very best wishes to you

Coolbeanz as you may know we are living with this awful condition through my mother who lives with us , so we have a real hands on understanding?

we will add to your great cause, but I think you need to up your targets, I will equally up my contribution

a great effort on your part, both of you

hugs and hope for all those afflicted by this and any other debilitating condition

those that aren’t already, live for today

Thank you David, I definitely think Glynn needs to up his target again. To think he started off hoping to raise £150 and he’s nearly quadrupled that amount already . I think it’s one of those diseases that impacts so much not just on the person but all those around. Glynn would be the first to admit he really struggled to adjust to the changes in his mum at first but now he is so brilliant with her and has learnt not to take it personally when she says things. It’s been a steep learning curve!! So sorry to hear your mum has it too, thoughts are with you and everyone else affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia. Xx

Sorry to hear it hasn’t been such a good day!! We’re really touched by your generous donation. Glynn said he’s managed to more than double his financial target but not sure doubling the mileage target will be so easy .
After a day of rest (mainly owing to strong winds) we’re back in the saddle tomorrow.:cycle::cycle:

Glynn did a great 60km ride this morning while I had to wait for a parcel to be delivered and as I’d had to miss it I dragged him out again after lunch.

Me "are we going out for a ride after lunch?"
Glynn "but I've just done 60kms!!"
Me " I know but I haven't been out yet and I'm happy to do a nice day flat ride"
Glynn "Oh okay then!!"
That's the last time I let Glynn choose the route!!

So that’s another 85kms Glynn has added to the total making it 252kms so far!! And it’s a very pleasant 26° here in Spain.

Oh John we are so sorry to hear that although maybe a blessing for your wife that she is now at peace. Sending you a huge healing hug.
We were making good progress until yesterday when I tore my calf muscle playing badminton so I’m absolutely gutted that I’m now out of action for a while as I can’t walk let alone cycle. Glynn is now having to carry on with his challenge alone for now but managed a very nice 44 miles today bringing his total to 200 miles in the last six days! We are blown away by the donations received and his total currently stands at £667 which is fantastic. I’m so sorry that the research is too late to help you but hopefully together we can all help Alzheimer’s UK to find a cure in our lifetime. Absolutely heartbroken for you John ?

Please except my condolences. She is free from this dreadful disease which only gets worse not better. Remember the good times and I am sure that is what she would want you to do xx
