Thanks but don’t fancy lay bys ,but been told they are not lay-bys but passing places and are not ideal with a 30ft Motorhome and towcar.but thanks for the reply. And yes there is a C&MC site there.

We stayed there couple of years ago, very peaceful, right on the edge of the Loch. Would stop again if in the area, apart from walks there is not a lot else there.

Looks good for a night or two max to empty tanks and re-charge batteries etc, but check out indie sites just north of Ullapool they also look great with fantastic views, close to ferry to the Hebrides also, if thats on your itinerary.
We hope to do Scotland early as possible this year before the tourist season kicks off (e.g Skye) and the midges, but hoping also to do as much wilding or pub stopovers as possible, as we dont like sites unless needed.
Good luck, enjoy yourselves.

We stayed there in July 2015. Quiet and with lovely views. Just our sort of place : we loved it. People who want towns, shopping and night clubs nearby will be disappointed!

We also stayed there. It's very slopey but lovely views. Too far from shops to pop out but recommended.

Its also one of the coldest places in the UK.

I’m sure that statistically this is true but it was lovely when we were there : sunny, dry and about 60 degrees F. That suited us because neither of us likes it hot. It’s a wonderful place.

Brian,

If your MoHo is 9.1m long then will the C&MC still accept it on a site with an 8.5m restriction. I've just looked at the club web page and the place looks fantastic - I think we'll give it a go ourselves.

Cheers,

Andrew

Whats not to like.

There is no toilet block or showers. It has fresh water and disposal facilities. The office stocks some basic food including tinned and frozen items and is some distance from any shops. There are some electric pitches as shown above which if you want then I suggest you book in advance as at times the sate will be very busy. We visited at the end of the season and the office had bread items but they were in the freezer.

We would definitely stay there again if ever in the area. Someone from the site was fly fishing in the loch and sheep and deer were roaming in the area indeed the sheep were wandering around the site. Some of the pitches were sloping but generally nothing that could not be coped with. One piece of advice is to ensure you are always topped up with fuel as garages are few and far between. We filled up in Ullapool and travelled via Durness and Tongue to Altnaharra and the fuel stations in Durness and Tongue were out of fuel. The route is mostly single track generally you are able to see the next 2 or more Passing place ahead.

PS You may be concerned when you fill up with water but do not worry at all. Whilst it looks more like whisky regrettably it is just good old water.

Great info as we have just opened the club magazine and it's on the front page, we are hoping to travel in September and the rates are quite good £17.90 per night.

When you wake to see a Golden Eagle flying over the van and lake, you don't question Altnaharra. When it happens for several days running, you begin to question whether you are living in the real world.

We spent a week there but have never gone back because we don't think our experience can be repeated.

Not sure whether midges will be a problem mid September???? Went to Scotland when I was a scout and we stayed in our tents for 2 days solid at the base of Ben Nevis, not good!

Our fav site ever, great for getting the kayak out and you can even fish for trout from there. 8.5m rule in place now and they won’t take us at 9.5m even though we know we can get on there.
