Ok. So this being our first trip to Spain in our Celtic Rambler Fifth Wheeler, we have quickly come to realise how tight the pitches are. Unlike England, the roads between the two lanes of pitches are very narrow and, what with the poles for the sunshades, we are finding it very difficult to manoeuvre our trailer onto the pitch.
Any advice on suitable sites for our vehicle in Almeria (our next stop ) would be greatly received.

You might want to stop at camping marjal on the way down, load of big ones in there, big pitches big site and lots of people to ask advice. :D
Might be a good idea to pitch up and have a run around in your truck, they take acsi discount card. :D

The trouble in winter is that most people that plan stopping anywhere have found where they want to be, and have booked that pitch your looking for.
Good luck . (y) Bob.

Many Spanish campsites were built for the Spanish to put their caravans on for the season, hence tight planted trees for shade. The introduction of motorhomes is a fairly recent thing (last 20 years or so). For large vehicles you will need to find newly built campsites, ie Marjal as already mentioned. These were built with large vehicles in mind.

You may also not be able to use Aires/camperstops (private ones especially) as you are classed as a caravan rather than a motorhome.

We have toured extensively in Spain with a 5'er, yours is a common problem despite what some say about never having a problem with one, I have been driving artics for 47 years and find it difficult if not impossible on many sites for the reasons you mention.
In Almeria we stayed on Camping Los Escullos for many years but realistacally there was only one pitch that we could access and we had to reserve it, the site has undergone some modifications in recent years so may be worth a try, we used pitch 106 at the top of the site and this was not easy.

http://www.uk.losesculloscabodegata.com/planos-los-escullos/Los Escullos-Plano Camping.pdf

There is now a camperstop nearby which you should fit on but not sure if they will allow 5'ers
http://cabogatacamper.com/

We also considered Camping Cabo de Gata which does have accessible pitches but we prefer the Los Escullos area.

There is also a site at Roquetas de Mar which has decent reviews and I know that large RV's can get on but we have no personal experience.

As others have mentioned at this time of year many of the better (larger) plots are taken or reserved.

We do not now tour with our 5'er, it is now on a permanent pitch in Portugal, partly because of the above problems.

Theres a camperstop south of Aquillas near Carolina, excellent size pitches, several 5th wheels when we visited last april. Plenty to see in locality, and some of best unspoilt beaches in spain, but dont tell everyone.

Been to Roquetas de Mar with my 5er many times and over the winter you get a double pitch so no problems getting on and off, 500 m from beach. Decent walking and cycling and bus into America, which is great and much underrated. If you intend going there you need to know the best route in, can send a PM with further details if needed.

Indalo near to Antas had a few 5th wheelers in it when we stayed there one night. It's a bit out on a limb, but good for a stop to break up a journey.

Could take a look at Camping Cuevas Mar, at Palomares, near Garrucha and not far from Mojacar. Normally has plenty of space. It's in the ACSI discount scheme and currently charges 18 euro with hook-up.

There is a naturist section, that we use quite often.

Cabo De Gata campsite is closed at the moment , it had a disaster with the floods in September all the Casa,s were destroyed and many vehicles written off . From the pictures I have seen it was between 3 or 4 feet deep and a foot of sludge was left.

You could try Camper park Olivares, just outside village of Los Albiricoques, where some of the Dollar movies were filmed. Just inside the Cabo de Gata park and not drowned in plastic. We were there for a week, hiking and mountain biking, there were a couple of big RV's there at the time.

Update on Cabo de Gata campsite an exerpt from an email to a friend who had a permanent pitch there.

Cabo campsite as we know it is no more
The site is a sorry place, but they are working hard to clear the mess (casas, bungalows, caravans, awnings, cars, contents and mud). They are hoping to reopen in the New Year on a small scale.
We managed to salvage some things from inside the caravan at a high level, books and clothes, but nothing from the awning which had a flood line round the curtains a metre high!
very sad to hear this.?

Another report on Cabo de Gata from friends that lived there they were very lucky to survive the floods.
This is an excerpt from their email.

We are both fine now but have had a long mental and physical period both dealing with and coming to terms with it all.

Everything was totally destroyed. The garden, Jeep and motorcycle and the casa damaged beyond repair, as were all the others. It was a pretty hairy experience and with over 90 people being rescued by the fire brigade, police and guardia civil it was a miracle no one was seriously injured or worse. We were led by firemen in full wet suits to relative safety in the restaurant walking through water almost up to Sandra's shoulders and fast flowing and full of debris. Eventually we were bussed out to the sports centre in El Toyo and we both decided to cross the road and go to the hotel opposite.

doesn’t look hopeful that there will be much up and running very soon, they have been so shaken by this that they have returned to UK to live after 12 years.?

Speve thanks for posting your last two posts. I feel for your friends, and can't imagine how they are feeling, with their lives totally turned upside down.

I hope they can get the support they need, but rebuilding seems out of the question.

Condolences for everyone affected either here or elsewhere.

Most of the casa owners and winter motorhomers have moved over to Los Escullios near San Jose
