A good article from the Grauniad, worth a look for those that are put off by the plastic!

We will be back at Los Escullos for a couple of weeks late October on our meandering route to Portugal.
Thanks for that, I've bookmarked it. We stayed at the wrong place when visited Cabo de Gata this year, Los Escullos sounds worth a visit!

i like to see the plastic . it keeps folk in work and generates money to the locality .
many of spains plastic area is getting smaller lots of the owners have moved the greenhouse tubes to maroc . but also the scrub desert tundra that the tubes were on have had that much grow bags tipped on them the ground is better now than it used to be . its certainly amazing to see how much they can grow down there and get extra crops with the nicer weather.
mind there are still lots of plastic between roquetas de mar and adra . great to see how many . goes along way inland as well.

Aug 09 to date 9,000 miles!
Fancy that - apparently there's a ROAD from San Jose to Genoveses and Monsul ! It were only a track through someone's prickly pear plantation when I was last there !

My friends still own their place at Retamar; his business partner and family were on Monsul beach (only them; not at all unusual in those days, on a weekday in August - in fact, we used to practice naturism there in isolated splendour because the only other living souls we would see all day were the goats!) one day when someone asked if they could possibly move a few feet along the sand, since they were 'in shot' for some film or another. I had thought it was The Lion in Winter but apparently not as they didn't buy the villa until approx. 1974. Wonder if it was Indy - released in 1981, so it could have been. ISTR 'a man and woman seemed to be having an argument' according to the voyeurs.

Along the stretch where all the campsites have appeared at Cabo there were a few shacks - they all sold the same thing basically. San Miguel, agua sin gas and pescada del dia. In Agosto - on Sundays only - another would be open. The bebidas menu was exactly the same BUT their sign said 'Hay Paella'. And that was your choice ........ Oh - and never a single glass for a drink on offer!

We loved it. I really don't think I would, now.

Obviously changed a lot since those days, we have been going about ten years now and things have not changed all that much in that time apart from a few improvements to the roads. The 'road' to Monsul is still unpaved but is quite wide and not too badly rutted.

It is still possible to find your own space out of season, managed to go skinny dipping on Genoveses in October 2 years ago:)

there was a road or track all the way from san jose to cabo de gata. turn off left on the way to the light houseon the cabo side.
we still get through on the m,bikes but they have put a barrier across now . well several years ago. you could easily drive it years ago. nice short cut and lovely views.
retamar as grown incredible to what it was but we still have a couple nights there.
nice down on the beach with local fishermen between there and el alquian.
they stopped the vans camping at the tres palms shame it was nice there. bit inland but good for parties .

The soil will also be improved by the tons of decaying plastic laying in it.In places there is 6 foot of plastic buried in the ground...Terrible that this pollution is allowed and on the coast the plastic is in the sea..Such a shame, ,BUSBY.
