Anyone have any ideas how to grease the ALKO Chassis, tried the booklet that comes with the van but its not very clear. What do I need and how do I do it?

Thanks in advance

I do know it’s a good idea to do it. But don’t know how to because I get mine greased every year when it gets serviced and mot. Have you looked on u tube.

Not yet that was my next port of call. Also want to know what I need grease gun wise.

Thank you, just need to find some grease, gun and a jack and stands,

Be aware that a certain type of grease is specified - unfortunately I am away at the moment or I would go to the garage and find some - Shell were one of the companies that make the correct grade.

Also people should be aware that greasing the alko axel is not part of an engine service or habitation check, might get done if serviced a MH dealer..... I get mine done when MH serviced and MOT as so much easier when van on ramps. I have a separate grease gun with the axle grease in that I take when being serviced and the mechanic does it without charge. Regarding the need to jack the wheel off the ground to grease, I have been told by Alko mech at a show that this is required to unload the suspension and allow the grease to get where it needs to. Having seen how much it costs to replace the axle I would not take the risk myself.

Also, not all Alko axles need greasing. Maybe it's just some of the older ones but on our m/h ( 2004) the Alko axle does not have grease nipples and does not need greasing.

My van is due it’s first service and 2 dealers say it’s not needed

Peugeot boxer chassis they are ALKO

Recommend greases. Shell Retinax LX, Kluber GL 1501 and CONDA 3746 SP. Guess anything better than nothing though!

I use Castrol Multipurpose Grease.

If you email AL-CO UK they'll tell you which commonly available UK greases are suitable.

Mine's a 2013 and has grease nipples. I generally do them every year and use my local garages lift. It's amazing how much grease they go through.

That grease is great if you need it

Well worth checking as my MH previous owner got lumbered with a replacement unit - just short of £3000 fitted.

Spoke to two dealers about first service they no nothing about greasing chassis on my van

Will our new Carthago C-Compactline i-138 need it doing then? If so where are the nipples?

My grease nipples are on both ends of the axle on the bottom. They have a protective ring around them with the nipple in the middle. (ALKO 2015) Find it hard to believe that anyone would accept anything that dealers state at face value given that other have been told a different line from the manufacturers. Of cause it is up to individuals to believe what they want but given the cost of replacement is circa £3000 I strongly suggest that anyone not sure what to believe contacts ALKO to confirm if it is a requirement or not and to ascertain if a special grease is required. Ask yourself the question - why put grease nipples on the axle if they are not required?

How do you know?

The procedure requires only that you inject a certain amount but it will happily take more than the specified amount. Are you just pumping loads in?

Depends on the way its built but you can normally keep on pumping until you blow an oil seal or it just droozles out of the hub onto the brake shoes / disc. Always best to follow the instructions. Why not use the search on the forum and read the griff ffi Every 12 months or 20,000km 3 or 4 pumps of the grease gun needed if you have an Alko rear axle. Nb It won't be done by the Fiat dealer as its not part of the Fiat maintenance scheduke. Ffi https://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/threads/alko-rear-axle-maintenance-and-replacement.8390/ et al.

One at either end of the main axle - look a bit like this.... (I appreciate not everyone will know what a grease nipple looks like)

Indeed, that was why asked the question. It sounded as though wiljoy was just pumping a load in rather than following the instructions.

One of us is confused  . You say it's a Peugeot Boxer so Alko chassis. It can be a Peugeot or a Fiat and have a Peugeot or Fiat (respectively) chassis. It can be either of those and have a Alko chassis. The converter will specify cab only if he intends to fit an Alko which replaces the OEM chassis from the cab rearwards. This is done so the chassis is lower and allows for a double floor, it is lighter, and the rear track is wider. If it is Alko it will be obviously lightweight and will have no visible suspension springs.

I don't see how it can get anywhere near the hub or brakes?

I didn’t suggest it could; I was merely pointing out that the process is to inject a set amount and was asking how he knew it “was surprising how much it takes”.

The correct amount. Had 7 alko chassis vans and it's very important to observe the quantities.
