Just bought one of Aldi kettles, this weeks offer at £12.99. If you are tempted to buy be aware the insulation of the handle is so poor you will need a cloth to hold it. Whilst you will not burn your hand it is so hot you might just let go and scald yourself. So be warned.

What do you expect?
The handle is silicon coated but the handle itself is metal.
Silicon is now used for baking trays, bread tins and bun/Yorkshire pud tins but you wouldn't take them out the oven without oven gloves.

Thanks for the explanation pappajohn, but I and many like me do not have your technical expertise, which is why I expect those who make and sell these items should protect us lesser mortals.
Apologies, didn't mean to sound sanctimonious.
Just pointing out silicone isn't a suitable thermal insulator... But it looks nice.

I would be caught out just like you. It would not occur to me that the handle of a brand new kettle would be too hot to hold.

@pappajohn I did not think you were being sanctimonious at all. To me you were sharing your knowledge, knowledge that I don't have, so I am grateful for your explanation.

And I would not. Expect to use a tea towel to pour water from an electric kettle. I would be inclined to take it back

It’s not electric it’s a stove top kettle but it still shouldn’t need a cloth to hold the handle to pour from it.

Mind you my granny used to have a cloth by hers which was used on her aga

@normanandsue i would query Aldi’s use of the wording ‘Comfort handle with silicone’, look on Amazon for Silicone Oven Gloves, specifications state heat resistant to 250 degrees centigrade

The difference between oven gloves and a stove top kettle handle......
Oven gloves will be at room temp when put on and may only be on for a few minutes so store very little heat.
That kettle has been on the stove top for god knows how long accumulating heat.

Same produce, different use. (y)

Why on earth would you leave a kettle on an active gas or electric hob or ring for ‘god knows how long’? A non electric kettle would boil in ~ 4 mins. Silicone rubber is heat resistant no matter what.:)

Silicone rubber is heat resistant no matter what.
Obviously not according to the OP.
Silicone is heat resistant to a point and won't melt easily but still absorbs heat and the longer is in contact with heat (the kettles metal handle) the hotter it will become.

My gran always had a tin 3/4 gallon kettle simmering at the back of the Rayburn stove.

I think you’ll find that’s why I suggested the OP should query Aldi’s wording of ‘with silicone’. Silicone is heat resistant, why do you think work top protectors and Trivetts are made from it, it’s so people can put hot pans on worktops without damaging the worktop.

Also why I said baking tins and bun trays are also made of silicone but you wouldn't want to lift one out of the oven without gloves on.
It is heat proof/resistant that's not the same as not storing and retaining heat. It means it won't melt in contact with heat but it will get bloody hot.

God forbid you drop it onto your foot!!!

BE CAREFUL!! X

Gave this a funny because it’s Ian who is speaking from experience, when everyone was saying go to hospital, eventually he did.

Thanks for the heads up.
I do like a rummage in Aldi’s bargain aisles but I hope you have returned the kettle to Aldi with a not fit for purpose explanation , they should withdraw them from sale .
You will sometimes forget and burn your hand.

Thanks also from me - I nearly bought one the other day.

What I will say about Aldi is they do not quibble on returns - if you are not happy they take it back.
