If you have dumped your hot water tank for winter is it still ok running the alde for the radiators ? going to pop out for a aimless drive tomorrow and was going to have heating on prior to drive from electric I have the manifold heat exchanger also

I didn’t know you could drain the hot water , but as you can’t have the heating on without the water getting hot how does it go on with no water

not challenging the much wiser replies above, just even more confused. We keep ours on hook up with temp set at 8C but always have hot water, even when well above room temp

It is heated indirect, same as a combi boiler , ie you heat the alde fluid & that heats the water in the tank , the 2 fluids never mix

It has the water inside the inner chamber. It just heats air rather than the water.

If the heating is running, the coolant is heating the water as it’s just one big pipe.

You are right David, if there is domestic hot water in the system it will get warm/hot with the heating on.

In the cutaway boiler the Glycol for the heating is in the green area but is surrounded by the domestic hot water in blue.

If there is no domestic hot water in the blue area no harm is done as it only hot glycol that heats it so no harm done.

If it heats the air what temp will it heat it to?

Edit - Martin covered this as I typed 👍

And an 'aimless drive' is against covid lockdown rules. Its not an essential journey.
Have you considered that?
See my signature, located in SW France, as long as i am indoor by 6pm curfew all is good. You almost had me feeling guilty - not :)

Depends how hot the glycol for the heating is ;)

OK, so if heating off due to room temp higher than setting would that mean the void where the water would be, if drained, would stay at ambient temp?

it is one thing I think I would like an option to turn off hot water heating

Can't be done, the closest you will get to turning the hot water off is running the pump on continuous, but you might wear the pump out.

The temperature of the glycol when the heating is on depends on the pump setting, on "continuous" the glycol heats up to warm the room but then will be allowed to cool as the room warms up. When on "Thermo" setting the glycol will remain at around 50deg and the pump will cycle on/off relative to the demand of the room thermostat.

Just to add, not sure that the "continuous" option is still included, and not in the van to check.

Aimless drive? Current guidelines about unnecessary travel? I think you might want to think carefully before you do so. Potential and very necessary fine of £200 may be on the cards. 🙄

Clearly you have not followed the thread or looked at my location. Who will fine me pounds in a European country ?

You are correct I haven’t followed your thread but I would suggest aimless drive whichever country you are in is not s as wise choice😱

Appreciate your advice however we have been under much tighter conditions for a lot longer and i am not prepared to leave the vehicle unused for such a period and I am being lawful and wise. We have had full lockdows previously where we could not leave without filling in attestations if that returns then yes I would follow the rules but until then i will be at liberty to enjoy life. The area I am in and will stay in for my drive is the lowest infected in the country, we wear masks all the time when out and about without exception. Let me remnd the question related to independant hot water and heating not the legality of movement.

If you make a public post regardless of the subject matter and include information that , on the face of it, seems irresponsible, then expect comments. Hope you resolve your water/ heating problem. 😊

If you dont read before commenting expect a retort. Thanks for the positive comment, some people responded on the actual topic and my conscience will be clear in that I will be warm on my drive without any detriment to me heating system , will share pics later.

Firstly, I have read the thread from start to finish before posting 🤣
Is it normal for the reservoir coolant fluid level to drop during a winter lay up?
My van is in storage and I drained down the water in October.
The Alde coolant in the reservoir was above minimum level but on checking last night, I can’t see any in the reservoir.

It drop the level when it cools but other than that it should only drop from evaporation in the header tank (minimal) or a leak I would think, there could be an element of air settling out over time.

I find it quite amusing when the MHF COVID police get it wrong then try and justify their comment.

Why I am doing this has to do with the fact we had an issue when buying the Van it had less than 10k KM on the clock and in new condition so we thought we were onto a winner 74k Euro loaded with goodies to the gill, we bought in March and came to the uk to see famly and friends just before Covid really stepped up, we had a leak and lost all the fluid and the alde pcb blew. We after many months managed to get it repaired under warranty due to severe lockdown in France where we could go nowhere. As this lifted we managed to get out for a couple trips and then we had an issue with the EGR again after quite some time we got that repaired under warranty so now we need to get some usage to ensure all is good and identify anything if needed to be addressed by warranty before the period expires which knowing the French will not be extended. After having the heating and leak repaired refilled we saw some drop in the glycol level and topped it up a little so need to keep a close eye on this.

If you have a heat exchanger then the system is heated from the engine, just set the stat for 20” with the gas and electric off. Heats the van up quickly on a run if there his water in the tank hot water also.
Excellent system. Coolant might contract in winter hence low in the reservoir. VW coolant is the same as the Alde , top up with that .

Does that mean no water at all is required in the boiler to run the heating?
