Not sure about 5th wheelers but I have seen the police move on a French caravanner when he stopped on an aire.

I'm assuming you mean the the Aires not on the motorways?
We've stopped at quite a few while travelling down to Spain & back.
No probs unless it's high season and the Aires are busy/crowded.
You have to remember because we (5er types) have to stay hitched
we tend to take a up a fair bit of room.
Otherwise we have always been welcomed and it helps if you spend
some money there.
One site told us that the site is free if we ate with them, we did, it was
and the food was superb.
Only once asked to leave, at Le Crotoy, by a policeman, but the site
was full 70+ and he let me stay that night (which is all I wanted anyway).
Not mentioning any names but at a show recently a dealer selling "All the
Aires in France" book would not sell it to me because I had a 5th Wheel!
"they are not for the likes of you, motorhome only not 5th wheelers"
What a tosser.
Live and learn.
