For anyone visiting Brugge in the near future, the Aire in the centre next to the bus station is Free .This is due to the roadworks around the entrance Rd.Electric is still available so all in all happy days.

We were there at Easter and the roadworks meant a diversion around the entrance but still had to pay, surprised you did not need a ticket to get through the second set or barriers into the Aire though.

Good result though saving 25 euros to spend on beer and chocolate.

No the barrier and ticket machine has been removed from the entry to the aire, and one of the concrete barriers on the far side of the bus station car park has also been removed to allow entry and exit.It is all legit. Not sure how long it will remain free but it was certainly an added bonus. You cannot take the usual entry route from the main dual carriagewy now as those slip roads are now blocked off.You have to drive past,go over the bridge and turn left at the traffic lights. Then take the first left and follow the bright orange signs wih BUS on them.

Hi many thanks (y)

Oooh can of worms!

Brugge is in Vlaams Gewest (west Flanders), and the language they speak is Flemish (basically a dialect of Dutch). They spell their town as Brugge (as in Zeebrugge - the sea port of Brugge).

The French speakers of Belgium call it Bruges. Out of courtesy, we always use the Flemish spelling and pronunciation when in Flanders. However, In the French part, Wallonie, we would for instance call Brussels, Bruxelles rather than the Flemish spelling Brussel.

We have found that although most Belgians are bilingual, they will stubbornly use the language that they identify with amongst each other, but will readily answer if tourists use French in Flanders or Flemish in Wallonia.

Have always found the Flemish to be mostly pro-British, and the Walloons, decidedly less so. May just be me, I suppose

Sorry if i have opened a can of worms. My sole intention was to make other funsters aware of an opportunity to stay at the Aire in B………. Without having to pay the usual €25 per night.
I will be more careful in the future. You never know who might be ready to pounce.🤨

I was intending to be humorous. Sorry!

It's nothing to worry about. The senses of independence in Belgium is broadly similar to that in seen in parts of UK!!

Followed your directions am now parked uk and will spend the 25 euro in a bar(y)

Still free today! Was expecting to pay €25 a night so very happy…at least €50 saved…may even stay a third night and go cycling outside the city. The location is great, literally 5 mins walk to the edge of the historic part of the city. Glad we got here early, about 11am, as it was full by 2pm.

The people in north Belgium speak a form of Dutch and call it Brugge. The south speak French where the language is French and they spell and pronounce it Bruges. I suppose it should be Brugge as it is in the north but as the capital is French speaking I suppose they have the say.
