If like us you're using the 2015 edition of All the Aires, the Aire at Aigues Mortes (1) page 125 is closed.
We found another one on Camperconact just outside Aigues called Les Poisson's d' Argent Website: www.lespoissonsdargent.com. GPS: N43.56337 E4.16398. It's privately owned and 10 euros (without electricity). Have been told by owner we can walk/cycle from here to Aigues along a private track and we'll see the horses and bulls the Carmargue is famous for. Just settling in now and will let you know if that's the case.

Well cycle/walk not really easy route and bulls and horses not in evidence so disappointed on that score but met up with lovely English couple who live in Brittany. Have spent a very enjoyable evening with them, so all in all not such a bad stopover.

Out of interest, which Aigues Mortes aire? The one in the car park to the East of the old town (Boulevard Diderot), or the one by the marina (Rue du Port) to the west?

Both are visible here in Google Maps.

When we were there 2 years ago the aire was just outside the walls in a car park, but we only managed one night because of the mossies.

The town originally got its name (Aigues Mortes = Acute Dead) from the malarial marshes that it was built in to provide an additional Mediterranean port in the Middle Ages. So many were dying of disease that settlers and traders had to be offered financial inducements to go and live there. Seriously.

Nice spot now though :)

As Dawn said we were there 2 years ago on the Aires right outside the city walls. The Aires on the other side of the river, was closed. The year before that the situation was reversed - we stayed on the one on the river's edge and the one just outside the city walls was closed! They like to keep us foreigners confused - but it's a lovely place to visit with lots of interesting artwork in the restaurants.....

This is where the websites win over the books, a 2015 book is at best based on 2014 information and can be much older. whereas CCinfos, campercontact you have more up to date info and reviews. No reviews for a couple of years = you need a fallback plan.

One by the marina and it was signposted. When we got there, it was padlocked, so maybe it's not permenantly closed and like "cliffandger" said they just like to keep motorhomers guessing which aire is going to be open and leave the aire signs up just to confuse you more. Have to say our visit to Aigues Mottes will not go down as one of the most enjoyable. The aire we used (see post above) was a bit rustic , although reasonably priced. There was more dog poo left laying about than I've ever seen anywhere else and the midges had a good feed on me last night. If it wasn't for the lovely English couple we met it would have been a complete disappointment. Very happy to leave this morning and now ensconced on sea front at Les Stes Marie's de La Mer getting sandblasted ::bigsmile:::bigsmile:. Think we'll be saying a fond farewell to the Carmargue tomorrow :smiley::smiley:

I quite liked walking the walls at Aigues Mortes, and the old town is pleasant to stroll around but it didn't keep us busy for more than a day. At Saintes Maries de la Mer I remember walking on the ridge tiles of the church roof (which is a bit unusual) and cycling into the dehydration chamber of the Camargue salt marshes on a hot day in August - you could get into serious trouble out there with a flat tyre and no water. There's also the wild flamingos not far down the track from the beachfront aire, but don't get downwind of them - they reek.

Not going anywhere at present 'cos there's a sandstorm outside ::bigsmile:. Expecting to dig van out of a dune tomorrow ::bigsmile:. We've got a lovely view of the sea and brave people trying to walk along the front, most are covered up with scarves to protect they're faces. If wind dies down will walk along to see the wild flamingoes. Have seen a few on our way here and lots of other interesting birds which I couldn't name so now need a book
