Airbag non-deployment

A friend of mine has recently had a side-on collision with cement mixer lorry. His van is a PVC Peugeot boxer 12 years old. The oncoming lorry had crossed into my friends' lane on a bend and caught the drivers side wing and door in a near-head-on collision. My friend is shaken but not stirred as they say and checked out OK in hospital.
My question is.....Why didn't his airbag deploy? Ironically he has had no trouble with airbag warning lights - a common problem it seems.

You say "near head on" drivers side wing and door obviously did not generate enough G to set the bag off and if it had gone off how would your friend be able to see to bring the vehicle to a safe stop after effectively being side swiped. what I am saying is I don't think it should have gone off.
