Thinking of fitting assisted air suspension to increase pay load on the rear axle, has anyone got any tips or advice. The vehicle has already been uprated when new to 3700kgs. I'd be looking at 3850kgs with the air suspension, seems rather excessive for such a small gain, 150kg minus the weight of the kit.

Fit it yourself for £279. The weight of the VB Air kit is 7.8kg

This price excludes a compressor but you don't need one IMO.

Cheers,

If you also change rear tyres to 225 70 15,rated at 112 kg you can increase rear axle to 2240 kg but can’t go over 3850kg total

many many years! since I was a kid
there are more benefits to fitting air assist bags than just payload increase. it firms up the ride reducing sway from passing trucks and reduces wallowing as you corner, it really transforms the driving characteristics of most vans.

You may find that you are still limited to 2000kg on the back axle. You can only go so far. The heavier chassis have different brakes and double springs as well as bigger wheels and tyres. You can get to a point where you have maximum payload on the axle but are still underweight.

First off many thanks for all your responses.

@wizza I currently have 225/75/R16 tyres ratted 116, the front axel is rated at 1859kg and the rear 2000kg all I'm trying to achieve is an extra 100kg on the rear axle. If I'm reading your response correctly, are you saying it would be a simple paper exercise to do so.

@ The Big One and @ Woodstock. If I go down the road of fitting assisted air suspension, by how much does it increase the height of the HM.

Once again many thanks for your earlier response

Well that`s our 13th year & still loving it.
We had it fitted to our our "W" reg Autotrail Cheyenne on a Merc Sprinter chassis, the difference in the ride was amazing, soft suspension gave a wallowing ride, passing trucks turned the motorhome into a ride like a boat

Our Fiat based Autotrail Apache is a different beast, doesn`t need it at all.

Original weight was 3500 1850 front 2000 rear on 15 inch wheels .Fitted air assist to rear and 225 tyres updated to 3850 and 1850 front and 2240 kg rear but you can’t go more than 3850 total on 15 inch wheels.Ifyou have 16 inch wheels you may be able to go higher best to ring Sv tech.

My van on a weighbridge is 3,520kg fully loaded with a rear axle of 1,920kg.

If I run my VB air suspension pressure at 3-bar then the body of my MH will raise by 21mm.

All the best,(y)

My upgrade with new front springs will take me to 4000kgs. 2240 on rear and 1950 on the front. I’m already on 16” tyres. Mike
