Hi

My Car has been playing up for weeks.

Poor or no starting

I took it to Jaguar Land Rover who could not find a fault.

We replaced the battery, all seemed well.

Drove to Spain, car was playing up.

Took the car to a local specialist who replaced the Starter motor and battery with an AGM (Apparently I had put a standard battery in (its what eurocarparts listed with reg)).

Car Broke down again a couple of weeks ago. It had to be recovered to my local garage who put the original starter motor back in.

We drove up to Islay this weekend and the same thing, clunk when trying to start.

Luckily, I had taken a Trojan battery and leads. Managed to get her going again.

We drove back today. Last trip after jump starting and 3 hour drive. Parked up and put a battery charger on. Battery charger shows 12.4 volts and only 25% battery charge!

Any thoughts please?>

If it's anything like a BMW, then you have to register the new battery in the cars ECU with the appropriate software or the new battery will not charge correctly.
As it happens Yvette's BMW ECU refused to register the new AGM stop/start battery and we had to fork out for a BMW badged battery which the ECU happily accepted. :Eeek:

It's an intermittent fault all right, but it could still be an earth return fault. One way to check that is to bypass the earth using a jump lead between the battery negative and the engine. If no difference, then it's not an engine earth problem.

You could check that the battery positive terminal is solid, too. And the connections on any of the big fuses on the positive terminal post.

One thing that would help is to take a voltage reading on the actual battery terminals. That way you can tell if the voltage drop is a battery problem or a bad connection problem
