with an AES fridge do you still need a fridge relay or does the d+ signal to the fridge allow it to chose when to use the 12v supply i appear to have two 12v pairs and a d + so assume both 12vs are permanent live

I would say that the switching is directly at the fridge or certainly for older Dometic ones, in our Flair I had a pseudo D+ from the solar regulator and that signal would put the fridge into 12v mode.

The two supplies are separate. One is a permanent live from the habitation battery, for the control electronics. The other is from the alternator/starter battery for the 12V heater element.

You don't actually need a relay if you only ever run the 12V element from the alternator/starter battery. But if you ever want to run it from the hab battery a relay or manual switch is needed.

I tend to manually switch to battery when driving, then switch to mains or gas if off grid.
When on auto after 15 minutes or so it switches to gas if there’s no mains power,
Which is fine if you remember.
If it switches to gas and the bottles not on it can be a bugger to light, once the gas is on.
As there’s always a little gas in the feed pipe from the last time on gas it lights fairly quickly from then on.

If you do want to run it off the hab battery it’s quite juicy it won’t last long.

I need to add that if there's no relay, and you turn it on 12V manually, it won't turn off when the engine stops, and will stay on until the starter battery is flat. If there's a relay, it will cut off when the engine stops.
