Bought my first motorhome about a year ago, went for a relatively cheap one to see how I liked it after switching from a caravan. Got to say I love it, much better than a caravan, so now I think the time is right for an upgrade. Will be staying with Hymer as I think they are quality vans that are very well put together, but will probably switch to an A class. I’ve seen an S820 for sale https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/hymer-s-820-motorhome/282792929054?hash=item41d7c5a71e:gR0AAOSwIFtaSjja that looks to be in very good condition but the price seems to be rather high.

There aren't many about , seems about on par with prices in Europe.
Theres probably a good possibility of a negotiation on the price
as due to its size/weight its probably not that big a market as the smaller hymers.
depends a bit on how quick they want to sell . Might be worth comparing with price for slightly smaller models

The good thing about this quality of van is it will hold its price for evermore. I have not seen the advert but it should be around £ 40-45 k. Depends on the condition.

Looks good but feel the sideboard is a waste. Could have another seat there.
Maybe retro fit if you need it?

@Norfolk Nomad - It sort of depends what it is worth to you, instead of focusing on market value. There aren't too many of that model.
Would you rather keep the £48,500 or buy the S820?

In view of its age a professional inspection and condition report might be money well spent.

Motorhome depot has a 2002 model for £34,000 . Amazing motorhome but only if you have very deep pockets if something goes wrong with it .

we have the sideboard option and really appreciate the extra floor space it gives compared to a seat, especially with a dog on board

I think this layout loses the benefits of using the captains seats for comfort on site

I have been surprised recently by the high residual values of these Hymers, we paid £68K for a facelift 2007 / 8 model four years ago and thought it would only be worth £50K now, but even that wouldn't be bad for 4 years 40K miles use, seems like it is worth a bit more

layout would be my worry with those seats

Quality van for sure, a fair bit of kit but who needs three inverters, I would want all the shelving out of the garage and get rid of the ugly tow bar as well, but the deal breaker for me would be the lounge(n) difficult to comment on price as so few around but if it's worth £48,500 our Flair must still be worth close to what we paid for it 6 years ago, so as suggested it's not going to cost you much in depreciation.

Can't see why it would be expensive to maintain if anything goes wrong though as its only a box of bits on a Mercedes chassis, most of the bits will be the same as on any other motorhome.

Might smell doggy;)

Sadly I have to agree, the layout of the lounge does seem very cramped with the front seats being unable to swivel. I will keep looking, thanks for the replies.

Approach with caution I'm always suspicious of phone numbers on ebay adds
It's a classified ad, always have contact numbers. Just don't part with any cash until fully checked over.

I've been trying to decide between that model and a Burstner i821g. I have a budget up to 80k minus trade-in. Every Hymer S820 I've spotted has been sold when I've rung to enquire. They are very popular and dealers l spoke to have a waiting list. The sideboard was an option when new. The biggest attraction of the Hymer for me was the true auto available on the Merc base.

Its far too expensive at that price.

We had a 2004 S820, with full torque converter auto that we sold for just less than 40 thousand about 4 years ago, he will never get that for a manual.

It is the later layout which changed late 2004 with the round bowl in the toilet area, ours was the model before this with the sink next to the bed.

My own thoughts were it was designed by 2 big, fat Germans, the bed is enormous, you could fit 5 up there, then no worktop whatsoever, why on earth would you do that?

Its plenty powerful enough on the flat but severely lacks power on any hills, 156hp, we uprated ours to 6400kg though and used every ounce of it, built in genny, x3 solar, Rolls Surrette traction batteries etc. Marvellous build quality though the Hymer part, absolutely great.
This was ours, as I say, Hymer part top notch build, engine not powerful enough for over 6 tonnes, design could of been better unless you are 2 big, fat 30 stone Germans who like sleeping and laying in bed all day.
Watch for the double glazed cab side windows, they have a tendency to blow and unless you do it yourself are almost 2 grand per side to replace. We met a couple at the peterborough show that both sides were milky out of their S820 windows, you couldn't see a thing, how it passed the MOT I,ll never know.

If he gets anywhere near that I,ll show my backside in Barnard castle buttercross.
