Ok all you experienced funsters tomorrow we are heading north from Gruissan as we are heading back to Calais for next week. I want to avoid the expensive toll charge for Millau bridge. Can anyone tell me if the alternative route via the D809/D911 is suitable for an 8 metre tag axle or is it a narrow road? It looks very windy on the map but that's not a problem if the road is wide enough. Would appreciate advice from anyone who's travelled it. :france:

I stayed at the campsite down in the town with a tag axle 9m, yes it is winding but perfectly doable no problem. The road is plenty wide enough.

We always went through the valley before they built the bridge, towing a caravan.

agree with all above plus you get much better views of the bridge going through Millau itself (y)

only adds about 25 minutes to the journey and quite a pleasant drive through the town. that way your pocket doesnt take a battering!!

Used it coming back this year .. Class 2 €13.70

before the viaduct was built we also drove through the town with a tag axle caravan .. remember seeing it being built .. sadly no pictures..

going across it was totally underwhelming..

26 euros , Robbin brds !

that must be Class 3 which is €25.10

Three axles would take it to class 4 and about €40

Agree Jim, its not the best of views of anything going across the bridge. The construction can be best viewed from the valley, and there are stopping places to view and take photos all through the valley. A fantastic construction, best viewed from below.

There is a motorhome parking area at the bridge visitor centre you can access this from the town side without going over the bridge, we stayed overnight along with a few others but there are no facilities, the visitor centre is well worth doing.

Well I have to say the route was dead easy and the views were fantastic, so glad we didn't go over the bridge. I'm sure some photos will appear in Augusts blog post!! :active:
