Hi all this may have been posted before but if not here we go.

We all take out our insurance and off we go but did you know that if you add or change anything you need to tell your insurance company or your insurance could be null in void. Any electrical, gas or vehicle change, if you fit a solar panel, inverter, alarm, gas bbq point anything it has to be fitted by a qualified registered dealer and you need the paperwork. So many people are probably driving around and I hope it never happens but if you have an accident or a fire the insurance find a way out of paying out.
Im with NFU and found out today that fitting solar panels to the roof would change the policy price but I was lucky because when I took the policy out I said the solar panels were being fitted and they had them listed I’d just forgot as it was back in April.

Im not saying don’t fit things or that your insurance won’t pay out but I would imagine they are all the same and you know what insurance companies are like.

Did the NFU indicate that the change in premium was because of any additional risk caused by said add ons or was because a perceived increase in value that needed to be reflected in a rise in the sum Insured?

I didn’t end up paying more because although not fitted at the time I told the insurance they were going to be fitted. I did a bit of Googling and read that it’s to do with the fire risk increasing but I also suppose it depends on the value as well.

Few years now
All Comfort seemed to be interested in when I spoke to them this week was any modifications to the vehicle itself. They werent interested in solar, gaslow etc.

So where does this stop?
You mentioned inverter, so what about sat-nav, TV, 4g antenna, led bulbs, thermostatic shower control, additional battery, these are all things I have done and certainly not informed my insurance company.
So what about if I sell the motorhome, the new owner would not know what was standard and what had been added?

In 20 years i've been with 3 insurance companies. Comfort, Safeguard and another odd one i cant remember just for a year.
Fitted lots of accessories both dealer and DIY installs, notified them and not only not been a problem but also no extra on premiums.

My understanding on why you should notify the insurance is in case of a claim..
Say you fitted solar, extra batteries, towbar etc and there was an accident then those items would be included on a repair or valued for the write off.

3 years 30,000 miles UK and Europe.. Campsites and off Grid.

When I told them I'd fitted rear air and uprated the weight to 4250 they weren't interested either.

I find it hard to understand about additional items changing the risk or value. When I bought mine new and insured it they didn't know what options it had, how many batteries, whether it had solar etc. So how can they make any comment on that in terms of a claim?

£180 extra? Did they justify that amount of access?
I would be taking to Comfort

Contrary to what a telephone numpty will try to tell you, it does NOT void your insurance..
Except...........
If something not declared is the cause of a claim
And if stolen undeclared items will not be covered
This is straight from a Lloyds actuary / adjuster, not just something that someone working on commission says

That was until May next year, when insurance ends. Comfort is no good i need a green card, at least with NFU that is free. I will just have to wait & see in May.

When you take out the insurance did they ask you for a full detailed spec of the motorhome ? No.

So how can they dispute a claim on the basis you added a solar panel ?

You may not realise it but many of the NFU offices are basically franchises owned by the sales guys, and, as a result they can charge what they want, so if they had had a crap month with not a lot of new business they can Jack their income up by charging these extortionate fees. I would check their Terms and conditions that they should have given you when you bought the policy, I would be very surprised if they mentioned that sort of amount and if they haven’t ask them to justify it.

I thought it was free now with all companies. It certainly is with Comfort, they supply it automatically at renewal

You may well be right, unfortunatly Comfort would not insure me for some reason. I believe there are only 4 or maybe 5 companies issuing them. Certainly Adrian Flux do but wanted i think £600 to £ 700 for it. I'm willing to be corrected though, if it has changed recently.

Yes, i agree. But do not want to take the risk, i would sooner they no everything, then hopefully no excuses if the worst happens.

Yes you are correct. This is my 1st year with NFU but they were very good to me earlier in the year when i was abroad & Adrian Flux wanted to charge me an astromical amount for a gree card, also i like the fact they have an office local to me. May 2023 when it is due again, will tell me if i stay with them. One of the reason's given was the risk of the solar panel being stolen!!!!:p:p

But I bet the Panel didn’t cost £180 🤪
