The last two trips abroad the adblue filler light has come on. A friend says he avoids this by filling up before leaving home. Is there any reason the tank cannot be topped up before the system alert?

Don’t think so, I got so fed up with a low adblue warning every 7 miles that I bought the huge size adblue, filled up and then after a long trip put what was left in so I could bin the container.

Just fill up... you don’t need the warning to come on. Mine has a gauge as a part of the dashboard display (Merc Sprinter) so when it shows 1/4 I can empty a full 10litre container in - which is a pain in the arse as the special filler device (as recommended by Theonlysue ) tends to leak. I must feel be doing something wrong as other people manage it easily.

Fill up any time and preferably from a pump - easier. There is a good app showing ad blue sites with and without pumps throughout Europe

Can only fill up from a pump if your tank has an annular magnet on the neck.

My AdBlue warning came on at around 8k miles... was dreading it as I had a real PITA trying to fill up when a faulty sensor indicated it was necessary after first getting the van [I assumed Citroen had just put delivery amount in, as they had with the diesel], funnel issues plus trying to manhandle a heavy container...

...but went to my local garage which has an AdBlue pump - cue loads of warnings about flow rates, nozzle magnets etc - but actually filling it was a dream.
  • Only bought as much as I needed... no wastage.
  • Convenience
  • Cheaper than buying a 10l container
  • No concerns about 'use by dates' or storage, or contamination

Mine doesn’t have any kind of a magnet that I am aware of. Just push the filler end in and press the handle

Which app do you use?

Edited:
Still curious...
...but actually given that I have some 1500 miles between first warning & critical, I suspect I will always make it back to base.

Either you filler has a magnet that you don't know about or the pump has had the system disconnected or is not functioning.

Who cares - it just works :giggle:

What about these plastic tubs, with plastic funnels? No magnets!

Just thought of another benefit of the pump - no plastic (y)

Plastic tubs and funnels work by gravity, a pump needs power which should only be supplied when the sensor in the nozzle senses the magnet.

@duxdelux any Mercedes truck garage can fill your a blue as well.
Are you missing a washer on your fill pipe??

Not all forecourt pumps have the magnetic release but it can be a problem when they do. I am glad I have an AdBlue gauge and think it is ridiculous that they are not standard on all makes.

Nope, checked it all out and it seals, but as it slowly empties the adblue eventually dribbles out of the screw cap on the 10l container. It looks like there is a pressure build up in the supply container for some reason. Not helped by the fact that it is a bloody awkward filling position on an A class

Most vans hold around 20 litres of the stuff that should be good for 5 to 8k of miles, after having it flashing and beeping all the way back from Mulhouse, i will now keep it full. as people have said, try not to pay more than a pound a litre, more than that is a rip off

I thought you could just pee in the adblue tank, after all thats its main ingredient isnt it?:D(y)
10 Ltrs could be difficult in one go though.
If it needs to be blue in colour that may be a problem, so may chuck in some Thetford Blue for good measure:roflmto:

I have to fill my adblue up every week , 10 litres every time. That’s on a ford Ranger which tows a heavy car trailer all the time . The pumps are great but my boss won’t let us use them , says it’s cheaper to buy in bulk and keep filling the containers. PITA if you ask me . There is a school of thought which suggests that you can run perfectly well without any blue but it would be illegal .

It might be difficult to test this because the system is supposed to stop you restarting the engine if it runs out. Some truckers have, according to tv sources, been using AdBlue defeat devices but I think deep doo doo awaits them if caught.

Adblue systems are very sensitive to contaminants, great care is needed when using refillable containers

The Iveco goes into a form of limp mode if the adblue runs out. The reasoning being that at lower speeds it maintains the lower emissions level when it runs out. So I do not advise running out.

Just put 17 litres into mine using a pimp In Germany. No hassle. I hate the plastic containers. Very fiddly and the big ones are quite heavy and hard to handle on my van

...different system in Germany I assume ::bigsmile:

I cannot use a garage pump as there is 1. no magnet and 2. no bloody room above the cap to get anything into it, the floor of the dash shelf is right there to stop me getting anywhere near it.
Filling from a can is awkward so that is how I do it ,, carefully. I supppose the proper sprinter ha easy access with nothing above the engine not working through a letter box.

I wish this thread had been started last week just before my ad blue light came on the dashboard for the first time for me, having only had this motorhome since June. It would have saved me trawling through the manual for instructions / information etc, being scared about over filling, getting confused over adapters, bottles, pumps. Worrying about how far I could drive before filling and the engine seizing up, (as I was a third through a 200 mile journey )etc, etc.
Called in to a Mercedes benz garage as I was passing, thinking it would be sensible to get proper advice for my first time and a mechanic who came out to me asked me where my diesel filler was and that he knew as much as I did!! Very worrying! !
Anyway, a salesman sold me a 10 litre bottle (for £14, I knew it would be dear) and reassured me I could wait until I got home to fill up.
However I was still wary of overfilling and needed to know how much of this (heavy) 10 litre bottle I should pour in.
Manual doesn't give the tank capacity, (although it tells you that the screen wash holds 6 litres).
Finally googled it, which I should have done in the first place, and found it has an 18litre tank.
Filler is at the front of the engine so I managed to lift the bottle onto the front and poured in half the bottle, and yes the funnel did seep at one point at the bottle end.
So now I know everything about ad blue. It's all a learning curve as they say!:D
PS, Google denies it's made from pigs urine.
