Back motorhoming after a 6ish year break!
We are in a PVC Citroen Relay in France just driving to our next destination.

We have done 1280 miles from new and the AdBlue warning has just come on it says 'cannot restart in 1400 miles refill AdBlue'

Would that be 1400 on the clock or 2680, we are confused! It doesn't seem many miles to be adding AdBlue!

The wording is a tad misleading if anything like my vans
1400 miles to fill up with adblue which would be 2680 on your clock.
You will know in about 100 miles that is probably the answer

On the basis that I am right you have plenty of time before coming back, and I would suggest filling up at a petrol station by use of a Ad blue pump as it is cheaper and that might be the difference between la villagoise wine and bordeaux superior

It’s generally from the point at which the warning appears. So in this case will be another 1400 miles or 2600 in total.

But to be honest don’t let it get anywhere near to that point. Best thing is to top up as soon as you reasonably can.

Quite a few of the large hyper markets have AdBlu pumps which are a lot easier than containers.

My Citroen based PVC refilled at 4K miles has decided it doesn't want any more AdBlue... Long story short - warning came on at 10k, tried to fill it but tank was full. Managed to stall the engine, warning disappeared, never to return [so far], now done 16K, passed two MOT's 🤷‍♂️ .

Yes it is confusing and a bit worrying when you could be potentially stranded in the middle of nowhere. We'll try and fill up asap

Which government is that then? Adblue is on sale across the world.
PS there's no duty on UK Adblue just VAT.
Funny how the cost has gone from 70pence a ltr to around £3 a ltr not saying it’s duty just robbery by some f***** get it written out asap it is a total waste of time🤬

It requires large amounts of gas to manufacture to the extent that 2 x italian manufactureres cut production as they were losing money. So there was a shortfall & price rose.

It’s 32.5% aqueous urea solution.
The manufacture of urea is very energy intensive hence the cost of urea has sky rocketed therefore the cost of adblue will do the same.

Yes I understand that but the main ingredient is distilled water 67% so from 70 p or so to £3 is not reasonable 🙁

i would imagine like with fuel they are making the most of the current situation to improve their profits. But their costs will still have increased significantly.

One of the plants I managed used to use about 200t of urea a day and it’s price varied a great deal based on the cost of energy (oil price). Would imagine it’s the same now. Also commercial prices have increased much more than domestic which is capped. So a 3 fold increase is not unexpected.

Well, the main component of Adblue, as above is urea. Urea is manufactured in the petrochemical industry by the Snamprogetti process which involves large quantities of Ammonia, which is a chemical gas manufactured in the Petrochemical industry, so yes is the answer.............

By the way, if you are paying £3 a litre for the stuff, you are being well and truly ripped off. This Adblue used to be £11.50 for 10 Litres and is now £18.50 - open the link for the discounted price

I remember at one point back in about 2006 melamine(made from urea) went from £300T to £1500T within 3 months as the cost of industrial energy increased and as a result some of the urea plants cut back on production.

Our light came on, having only done 3000 miles from new (Ducato though). About 70 miles later we required a flatbed lorry to take us to the dealers.

RAC tried for 2 hours to get us going, with no joy.

Yes, we followed all the manuals instructions to the letter. Now we top up every 1000 miles, which takes about 3.5 litres.

I would be less concerned about filling up and being stranded, I see it just like the warning light for diesel running out, they have given you a 1400 mile warning, whereas with diesel they might give you a 2 gallon warning before the amber light goes on which would mean you would be stranded a lot quicker.

Not too sure if having only a couple of litres of adblue makes any difference as to having 10 litres of it though, but that is my outlook on it

Did you have the 1500 mile amber light come on ? and was it the lack of adblue that caused your breakdown ?

We have gone as low as 1000 miles of anticipated journey time available before filling up before so (and I am not a great knowledge on this) see no great concern, or am i totally misunderstanding this ?

Fiat Ducato manual recommends a minimum of 5 litres once the light comes on. You’ll need even more if you keep driving. (y)

So am i right in presuming the amber light comes on probably slightly above 5 litres ?

Peugeot / Citroen may be different, but…….

Light came on, thought we were okay to get home (about 70 miles). Topped up with 14 litres (meaning there was at least 5 litres in the tank), warning light stayed on. Drove around the block to see if that made a difference, ’Engine won’t start if you switch off message’ came on, so parked back on the drive. Switched off….wouldn’t start again.

Called Fiat Assist who sent out RAC commercial who spent 2 hours trying to get it going. The guy had Adblue cascading out of the filler, so I’ll never worry about a slight overfill again, but nothing.

Piggy backed to Dealer who reset the system.

I’ll never allow my light to come on again. I’m more than happy to top up every 1000 miles to avoid the inconvenience.(y)
