This has disappeared from my laptop, and when I try to re-install I get the message "This item has been disabled in Chrome" Then I'm given an option "Enable this item" but it just re-cycles.
Is it just me?

Instead of doing it from that screen go into your Chrome settings and select 'More Tools' then 'Extensions' and Enable it in there. If that doesn't work just uninstall it and reinstall.

Add Block Plus stopped working in Firefox some time ago, I now use uBlock Origin, I think it is muck better than add block.

Well once I'd come back to my computer, that took all of about a quarter of a second to do - successfully! Many thanks Mel, much appreciated

I changed over to uBlock Origin as well because of the way ADP was whitelisting adverts of companies who paid.. Seemed underhanded to me and there were other things I didn't like at the time but can't remember now.

uBlock Origin has actually proven to be better for me.

In what ways is uBlock Origin better than Adblock Plus, please?
I installed ABP on recommendation from you guys, it stops my ads and speeds up my use of the lappy, what am I missing out on? or is it only significantly better for pro/semi-pro/ heavy users?

I have swapped over quite a while ago now. I think perhaps two years. I don't recall any specific differences in actual use. However I do know that I find it easier.
ublock did have some features that adp didn't but I can't remember exactly what they are now. Also ublock also appears to be faster and less resource intensive at least in my experience.

I just did a search for you to see if the facts confirm my personal bias.

https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/Firefox-version:-benchmarking-memory-footprint#results

Results
  • Firefox 52 (benchmark results updated on April 3rd, 2017)
    • Two measurements needed with FF 52.0: Main Process + Web Content
    • No blocker: 175 MB + 1,397 MB = 1,572 MB (reference memory usage)
    • Adblock Plus 2.8.2: 241 MB + 626 MB = 867 MB (reference minus 705 MB)
    • uBlock Origin 1.11.4: 176 MB + 488 MB = 664 MB (reference minus 908 MB, ABP minus 203 MB)
  • Chrome 59 (benchmark results updated on April 3rd, 2017)
    • No blocker: 1,615 MB (reference memory usage)
    • Adblock Plus 1.13.2: 1,253 MB (reference minus 362 MB)
    • uBlock Origin 1.11.4: 832 MB (reference minus 783 MB, ABP minus 421 MB)

As @Gromett says ABP started whitelisting some sites who would pay them for the privilege!

ABP started slowing things down way too much (long ago). Yet another long-standing uBlock Origin user here.

My life is ad-free and browser speeds are completely unaffected (y)
