We are having a couple of weeks in France next month and would like to be able to have access to the internet. What options are open to us. I know I can buy an add on to my phone contract (Orange) for a MB allowance but wondered what other Funsters have done e.g. buy a local SIM?

Not long enough, but a little common sense helps..........
Buy a 3G sim with 3gb or 5gb of data installed and use that as there is no roaming charge with 3G in France now. That should last you the month for everyday surfing. That is if your phone is unlocked. Failing that get a mifi (unlocked) and your sorted.

Lots of Tourist Information offices have wifi-- often free but otherwise just €1 or 2. Lots of cafés and bars also do free wifi, and there's always McDonalds.

We are BT broadband customers so will look out for any FON signals.

OK now I know I am getting old. What is Mifi? And how do I use it?

Don Quixote. Do you mean a data sim on the "3" network, Unfortunately all our phones are locked to Orange so next question is does anyone know a reliable, cheap method of unlocking?

Yes any good phone shop. They may sell you a mifi as well ( which can be unlocked at a later date if needed ) I'm using the mifi and 3G sim right now to type this. Works across France.
