So, I’ve heard this is awful for your wing mirrors etc heading north. BUT what about southbound? Is it as bad? Logic would dictate no as you’re on the loch side but…..

The concerns about this bit of road is that it is narrow and twisty and as you say heading north the cliff faces come right to road side at some points..Saying that heading South the Loch walls do the same.
HOWEVER. IMV with a little bit of care and attention you will be fine... Buses and HGV artics use it..
If heading North you are therefore going up into the Highlands and, trust me there is much worse roads than the A82.

Used to do that run twice a month and never lost a mirror remember horror stories are far more interesting than poodled up/down enjoyed the scenery incident free
Just go and enjoy

It's not that bad, the narrow bit doesn't last for that long. Just keep a careful eye out for the wide bits and be prepared to pull over into them for approaching coaches / trucks if it's about to go narrow.

It doesn't last for that long, then the road opens out to some lovely scenery once you're clear of the Loch.

we travel the 82 frequently in the Moho.
A couple of tips.
If you’re not confident northbound pull in at Tarbet or southbound pull in at Inverarnan and tag onto the back of a log lorry or bus they clear the way.
If heading north or south pull in your offside mirror between these two points no ones going to overtake you.
The narrow stretch is only around 5 miles I’m sure you would have driven on worse.
And welcome to Bonnie Scotland.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

It's short nerve racking 5 or 6 mile North of Tarbet. The road is fine its the people on it that can't drive that are the problem. You could be the best driver in the world but if you come across someone just treating it like a normal A road that's when the fun begins. There are parts where it's not possible for 2 larger vehicles to pass each other , sometimes you can crawl past with wing mirrors tucked in sometimes if you arrive at a very narrow part the same time as another motorhome/caravan/bus/lorry someone has to give way. Stopping on an A road is something some people can't seem to get their head round. The professional drivers are mostly pretty good. So always be prepared to stop even if there isn't give way directions and even if people behind are peeping. If I have to do it I try to avoid busy times. A stop overnight at the Slanj and away before 7am is perfect. Going south is slightly better but you have to contend with other vehicles heading north wanting more than their share of the road. If I'm going Oban direction I will sometimes head for Inveraray then over the hill to Dalmally and on to Oban. It's a beautiful road in comparison.

Drove it last year in my 650 and was fine. Not so good at Fort William though earlierin the day, another fellow motorhome driver, reading his phone, drifted over the line!! Lost my wing mirror and dented the door!! He bloody drove away

thanks all, Im heading south, never used it northbound always avoided it as not prepared to take the chance.

Trip is tomorrow, Im at Fort William now for the second time in a week, tomorrow is either back to the Kelpies or head for the CAMC site in Glasgow, not decided yet.

Sure you talking about Loch Lomond...
There is no other route down the East coast of it... A82 only road..
Are you maybe thinking of Loch Ness It has lovely road along East Side instead of the West Side A82?

He said the other side so I assumed he meant to get round it as opposed to along it's actual coast? Hence I think he is talking of the A82?
I could be wrong though lol.

Yes think you at Loch Ness.. Inverness to Fort Augustas on the B862..
As you say absolutely stunning and IMO doable in any moho.. 👍👍👍

We went up this road regularly in a big flat bed truck, delivering coal to dad's cousin in Taynuilt, roads were narrower then no problems at all.

Unless you count dad chucking a dog end out the window and setting fire to the cargo, the loch and any container we could find saved the day. Could have ended up with roast chicken as we were delivering some hens too. Oops
Have been there in the Mizar and the Escape one almost 7M the other 7.32M

Drove south down there when they were doing a test run of delivering wind turbine blades in the opposite direction. Mayhem!

I avoid that section of the A82 like the plague. As Paul said, the route up through the Trossachs is much more relaxing and, in my view, just as scenic, if not more so.

There are plans to widen that section of the A82, but it's a huge undertaking, given that it's squeezed between the loch and the rock face with the West Highland rail line on top of it.

Only trouble with that route is you miss the absolutely fabulous and haunting visit to the Drovers Inn!
