Went to visit the rellies or at least the SIL who has moved from Winterbourne Down near Bristol to Hanham also near Bristol. For the van, it was a trip home as Bristol is where Baileys are made.

We found a delightful C&MHC CL called Culley’s Farm about 10 minutes drive from Hanham. A very friendly and welcoming host, Florence, was there to welcome us and hook us up on a gravel hardstanding outside the house rather than a rather wet field. We were offered a cup of tea but were so frazzled we politely declined just wanting to set up. We’d had an appalling trip down from York on Monday having negotiated icy roads in York all off 30 miles to the A1 before getting caught in a traffic jam near Ferrybridge for an hour and fifty minutes without moving. When we finally got moving again we had a warning that there’d been an accident on the roundabout where the A1 joins the M18. Another lengthy delay. All in all, a 7 hour trip on what should have been 3 hours 52 minute journey.

Anyway, the point of the post is to say how delightful we found the countryside and environs of Bristol. After sorting the matters we came down for, we went for lunch at a pub near Hanham called The Chequers Inn. Right on a bend on the Avon canal, the trees just past their Autumnal best the views are lovely. We will stay three nights before returning to York on Thursday.
The first trip since having lithium batteries and associated kit fitted hasn’t proved a test of the batteries yet as we were in hook up and didn't want to deplete our gas, LPG being relatively difficult to get in York. But happy to say that the new Victron IP22 mains charger stopped charging the batteries as they were full. The Victron Connect App worked flawlessly and it made for more interesting viewing than the TV on Monday. 🙂

We look forward to further trips down to Bristol and to exploring those areas of the country of which we know nothing or little. I’m looking for forward to Suffolk, Norfolk, Devon, Somerset and Cornwall. And that’s without Wales and Scotland.

Glad you enjoyed it we live in Hanham about half a mile from the Chequers Inn. Its a good spot for exploring both Bristol and Bath (y)

Nice photos but dosen't look like that in the summer gets absolutely packed!! ::bigsmile:

Didn't know Culleys Farm but just looked it up and looks great. (y)

Bristol is great, enjoy our stay!
I must say, everyone’s been really friendly and chatty. Even if the accents are a little strange. As my wife has just pointed out, “that’s a bit rich from you!”(as I sound like a cross between PW Botha and Schalk Burger)😃

Also, I’ve pretty much found people everywhere are the same, friendly, helpful and nice. There are always exceptions.

There's a number of places to get LPG nearby. I often use the big Asda at Cribbs Causeway, The pump is nicely set up so you can fill both gas and Diesel at the same time and pay in one go.

Hanham is nice and I'm certain that I have been to the Chequers Inn with friends.

Our favourite pub near the river (but not actually on the bank) is the Bird in Hand at Saltford. The access road is too narrow for anything bigger than a VW camper, unfortunately.

Enjoy your stay!

Thanks for the tip of the Bird in Hand. And you’re bang on about the access roads to the rural pubs like The Chequers Inn! Luckily we were being ferried about in SIL’s little Toyota Yaris. No way would the van go there. Was anxious just imagining it. 😱

LOL. How do you think they get beer delivered to the pub?
I shudder to think. Whilst we were having lunch the owner of the pub came over to tell is that the lane was blocked by a lorry. I said, “do you do evening meals too then?“. He laughed but I gather it’s not an unknown event. 😱
Edit: Actually, in all seriousness, I’ve no idea how they get the beer delivered. Maybe by small trucks or vw combis? Maybe by barge from the river?

Think they use transit vans!

The Bird has been our local for 26 years now, after moving out of Bristol to Saltford. Colin and the staff make the pub, and the location’s not bad either. We live just up the road!

Thai Cafe also very good although we haven’t been for a while!

The roadworks all around Ferrybridge were still going on Tuesday on our way up to IH and coming back yesterday it was no better Northwards, stationary at times so if you know a way of avoiding it on your return then I would. It took us an hour and 15 minutes to travel 5 miles on Tuesday and that was without an accident, not quite as bad heading South yesterday but Northbound looked dreadful.

Yes, we’ve decided to stay on the M1. Currently enjoying a Greggs cheese and onion pastie at Trowell services. Not long to home now.
Was passed at speed, on the M42, by a bronze Carthago towing a Smart car. About 20 miles further on it was stationary on the hard shoulder with its hazards on. Hope they’re ok!

I was hoping you’d know a better route.

Incidentally Caroline, I’ve been wracking my little brain as to where “IH“ is but to no avail. 🙃

I’ll jump in, as I am browsing, IH are at Knottingley, Yorkshire.
So is ’IH’ a person, business or what? Of course, none of my damn business.😂 Just curious.

Sorry I was so slow to reply but I see others have replied. We are on our second IH630RD motorhome. It’s a PVC which is what IH (Ian Hartley) specialises in. Top end. It’s still under warranty hence the long journey for the hab check, there were a couple of IH specific things needing sorting. Nice people to deal with.
