Dethleffs Trend t7051
After spending months researching what MH to purchase and double checking that the new vehicle ticked all the boxes we opted for a new Dethleffs T7057 dbm.
I have now realised that the low profile van has an overall height of 2.90 metres which is fine and under the 3m limit that we wanted however we have opted for a Automatic Satalite system that has a travel height of 21cm. Taking into account the height of the vents I think my new overall height will be about 3.02m.
Can someone please let us know if this takes us into a different toll charge fee on the European motorways and are the Satalite systems any good?

Our previous van was 3m 05cm and yeah the machines always tried to charge us Class 3, but we always pressed the operator button and merely said 'Camping Car - classe deux!' and they changed it down again.

We've had automatic satellite system's for over 12 years now. They are great for UK touring as long as you have no obstacles in there line of reception. NO use touring Europe as the reception footprint is getting less all the time. Possibly good down to Millau area but no chance after that. Not sure about the height rate on tolls as we never use them.

Well the only time we used a peage, it was expensive and obviously with being 3.05 they probably charged us a class higher than a Moho but wasn't aware of telling them that then.
Doesn't really matter now as I just don't use peage anymore.

Our 3.2m AT Arapaho "ALWAYS" goes through a toll at Class 2, not sure why, obviously I dont question it. Have known smaller vehicles to go through and be charged Class 3.

Our Benimar 202 was supposed to be 2.89m I put a Snipe Max Pro on which was 27 cms tall which should have put us over, however I am sure the height given by the manufacturer is as they come out of the factory load some stuff in and 2 passengers and we were 2.98m to the top of the dates dish so no issues on the tolls.

Motorhomes go as Camping Cars virtually anywhere in France!

Unfortunatly not, we were on an Aire in the summer (forget location) got talking to a family in a new Chauson and everytime they went through they were charged Class 3, overall height was less than us ??

AFAIK when you query class 3 at the toll, the remote operator has the option of viewing your MH via CCTV. I presume if they see a sat dish or aircon unit on the roof, they give you class 2, if they don't they wont.

Like most things in life there are exceptions to every rule

ps For those who are fortunate to have the time to avoid toll roads, there are just as many if not more who have time limited holidays

Another factor to consider, depending on how you plan to cross are ferry charges. From memory Brittany Ferries have one class up to 3.0m so if you are above this it will cost a little more. The increase may not be significant and as it's only 2cm you might be prepared to ignore it - though a collision between your sat dish and the ferry is only going to end one way. :) Height won't matter if you plan to use the Chunnel as I understand it is one size fits all with their pricing.

I’ve got a vague recollection of seeing that the height is measured at the front axle? If so, sat dishes etc on the roof will generally be further back than that so may not have any effect. On the other hand, a big overcab would, so JohnandKate’s Arapaho should be over height??

Last year class2 was standard for all camping cars.On the unmanned tolls,if they give you a class 3 press the button and tell them you are a camping car ,They will drop it to 2. On the unmanned tolls, you sometimes can be mistaken for a wagon due to the height. Press the button and tell them camping car and they will change it . Never paid class 3 in 6 years, just speak up ,it also helps if you tell them in French .

Yep - pronounced 'Comping' Car en Francaise though, and 'Classe' as 'Classer' deux !

In Portugal, toll classes are calculated by height directly above the front axle (not the roof), and no of axles

I paid class 3 at all the automatic Peage booths except for the only manned one we went through and she gave us class Deux, mind you I didn't stop to press any buttons I just coughed up.

I feel I could have saved a few squid now...... :crying:

Not if they are 3.2 High and 4 ton, although we have never been charged class 3 on a manned station, automatic, even pressing the button and saying it is a camping car no longer helps.
