I've been in that situation four times and each time it feels as if my heart has been wrenched out of my body. It is always such a very hard decision to make, even though you know it's right and that it will end suffering. I hope the following poem will help … although I wept buckets when I re-read it a few moments ago.

IF IT SHOULD BE
If it be I grow frail and weak
And pain should wake me from my sleep.
Then you must do what must be done
For this last battle just can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love and friendship stand the test.

We've had so many happy years
What is to come will hold no fears.
I know you'd not want me to suffer, so
When the time comes - please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend
Only please stay with me till the end.
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes, they no longer see.

I know in time you too will see
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail, it's last has waved
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Do not grieve that it should be you
Who has to decide this thing to do.
We've been so close - we two these years
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

I love you now and forever more
Your friend, companion and so much more ...

I can feel, and understand, your heartbreak from here. I'm so sorry for your loss, that photo of Poppy speaks for itself, she looks a gentle caring soul god bless her.

She will always be with you, of that I'm sure, I do hope you take comfort from her presence. She'll be running around enjoying herself now, pain free, but when you feel a warm nose nuzzling your hand, that'll be her

RIP Poppy darling x

Honour her memory by giving another a good home. Each time it has happened to us (they just don't live long enough do they?) I have given another rescue a home almost immediately. It doesn't reduce the pain but I just think it's the best thing I can do.
