So very sorry for your loss. It's the hardest decision to make, but one made out of love.
RIP Poppy, run free over the bridge x

All of us that have been through it really feel for you now. Remember the good times. The life you gave her and the happiness she brought you. Easier said than done I know - we still desperately miss our Ginny 18 months on. Grief is the price we pay for love. You were there when she needed you, and she went to sleep in your arms. She would have been happy and at peace - with the person she loved most in the world. xxx

Reading these posts has brought a tear to my eye too. Its always very sad when we lose our faithful friend but sometimes putting them to sleep is the kindest thing we can ever do. You were right with her til the very end. Try and take a little comfort knowing the love you gave each other and the happy times you shared. SORRY. I feel your pain.

I am so very very sorry. I have also had to face this more than once and I know how much it hurts. Try to remember how happy her 14 years were with you and what a wonderful owner you have been.

On and off for many years.
Nothing I can add to every one else's comments.

Still miss my Kerry every day even though it's been over 20 years.

I've been in that situation four times and each time it feels as if my heart has been wrenched out of my body. It is always such a very hard decision to make, even though you know it's right and that it will end suffering. I hope the following poem will help … although I wept buckets when I re-read it a few moments ago.

IF IT SHOULD BE
If it be I grow frail and weak
And pain should wake me from my sleep.
Then you must do what must be done
For this last battle just can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love and friendship stand the test.

We've had so many happy years
What is to come will hold no fears.
I know you'd not want me to suffer, so
When the time comes - please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend
Only please stay with me till the end.
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes, they no longer see.

I know in time you too will see
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail, it's last has waved
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Do not grieve that it should be you
Who has to decide this thing to do.
We've been so close - we two these years
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

I love you now and forever more
Your friend, companion and so much more ...

Very sorry to hear about Poppy. She is the spitting image of our old Gipsy who left us last year at about the same age. :(
