Evening All,

Watching our local (South West England) TV news and they are announcing
that BF are looking at running a Plymuff-Porto ferry, possibly starting at the end of the Month.

Watch this space.

I wonder if the service will be retained once normal travel resumes? I suspect they might only run it while Portugal is on the Green list and France remains terra proibita. :)

Oh that sounds very interesting! Any more info?

What I have reported is basically all they said but it gave the impression that they aren't flying a kite.
They need the income. They've got the ships and they know they have a ready made customer base.

As far as being a suitable port is concerned. Porto has it's own Container/Cruise port at Leixoes and I can imagine
that there already will be a ferry service to the Azores.

A close look at Google maps shows a Ferry Ramp.

I saw that report too, crossing time of 30 hours was mentioned. No idea of the demand or whether it would be "as well as" or "instead of" but they did say they were hopeful France would be back on the green list by mid June so on that basis would they be considering a new route so close to the date as an "instead of". I would certainly consider using it as a quick way to get well South. Time will tell as with the Tangier suggestion.

Brittany Ferries new ship now takes 32 hours on the Portsmouth to Santander run, this compares badly to the 18 hour crossing from Plymouth to Santander on the Pont Aven that we used to do.

It's my view that the 32hr journey is more down to dep. and arr. times rather than the lack of ability of the ship to do the journey quicker.

We've done cruises in the Caribbean where the ship has left one island at 5pm and arrived at the next port of call 14hrs later and you could see one island from the other. The ship was going around in circles all night.

I reckon Porto could be reached in 42hrs.

Quite some time ago Portugal suggested that they may use their discretion re the 90/180 day rule for U.K. holidaymakers. This could be relevant.
I was just reading up on extended visas for Portugal, things maybe looking a little brighter, just paid for police check in case we decide to get a Spanish visa

42 hrs 😱🤔 that’s a mini cruise 🤣
I would rather do the 6 hrs and pace my way down and enjoy the freedom 😉
That's if we can travel through France and Spain,,BUSBY.

Pont-Aven……..great ship….when it’s working. :censored:

3 trips in 5 years it had serious problems……caused us major issues when doing our motorcycle touring. Now we’ve got the van finding a bed or having to drive all the way up through France won’t be such an issue. :giggle:

I've done the 30+ hour Portsmouth Santander. It is so that they can dock in Brittany to change crews one a week. I was apprehensive in advance, but really enjoyed it. You get two nights aboard, which works really well, as you turn up in the evening after work, only have one day's time to fill and still get dumped the other side just after breakfast ready for a long drive. I'd go as far as to say it would now be my favoured itinery.

Spanish Visa....I assume you are seeking Spanish residencia....that's what the Non Lucrative visa is being put in place for...not as a means of extending your permitted stay of 90 days in 180.....unless you can advise me otherwise....please share your information so we all can benefit...

I thought the new Ferrys were slower and more economical. 18knots for the Galicia

According to this article BF still haven't decided yet between Plymouth or Portsmouth. -

Would have to be Plymouth

If that’s true that’s excellent news! I’ve done Portsmouth>Bilbao which is a two night crossing so Plymouth>Porto should be same. It’s like having a mini cruise before you even start your holiday. And if you factor in fuel/site fees etc the cost is not as bad as it initially looks (circa £1k plus for Portsmouth>Bilbao return). Fingers crossed.

I also saw on Facebook 2 months ago that a Co. called United Seaways are supposed to start running a ferry from Pòole to Tangier Med. mainly for shipping fruit etc, direct to UK avoiding the Brexit hassle, but will also carry passengers vehicles, butI haven't been able to find out any more, have anyone else heard about this.

I wouldn't be surprised if tthey continued to run it after everywhere is on green lists as I think it would be almost as popular as Santander as a lot of people would like to avoid the long drive South during the cold months while en route to PT.
