A washed out field drain, due to the heavy rain falling on the fells behind our son's in law's house, uncovered this little surprise !
It looks like a 2" mortar as I've found a few spent ones when I've been detecting just south of Penrith (Lowther Castle was taken over in the last war for specialist training of tanks units fitted with extra strong searchlights that were planned to be used in defending the Suez canal)
Not sure what the plan of attack is going to be, but knowing what his Ma in law is like, she'll have put name tags and gas masks on everyone and sent them off to live with relatives in the countryside !

I had the most fantastic day today. My mate Deb and I went to see The Red Dress in Wells.

If it comes to a church hall near you, I recommend you go and see it - the story is inspiring.

I needed a bit of induction hardened bar to make a couple of pins for the timber harvester, so called at my mate's workshop to pick up a short length. He had these on the counter next to a larger, 3 colour anodized poppy. One of the apprentices knocked up a pile of them last year on the CNC, he put the pic on Facebook and the donations came rolling in. He presented the British Legion with a cheque for £2500 last year !

Camping beside the truly turquoise waters of Lake Tekapo on the South Island of NZ. 6 degrees at night and 22 degrees during the day.
It’s lupin time and although they look so beautiful around the lake and on roadsides they are becoming a noxious weed.
Photos include the Church of the Good Shepherd and a statue to commemorate the importance of the collie dog to the sheep farmer. ”Get down Shep”.

That view of the church brought tears to my eyes, we visited in 2004 and renewed our vows. Annoyingly we had a coach load of Japanese turn up and acted as witnesses I think we are on at least 50 selfies 😝😝😝😝😝

Wow! Tears of joy, I hope.
Your story of the Japanese tourists reminds me - several years ago, when the local police office in Tekapo died, his funeral was held at the Church of the Good Shepherd. A coach load of Japanese tourists was disgorged and “stormed” the church with their selfie sticks and posed in front of the congregation. They truly thought it was an entertainment put on for their benefit.
I have to admit that towns like Tekapo are missing the Japanese (and other nationalities) this year, but only for their spending power.

That’s what happened to us, the coach driver did apologise and we saw the funny side of it 😁 better still one of the Japanese produced a bottle of Whiskey and gave it to us, as he thought we were getting married for the first time, result.
