A photo of the day thread

Looks like we’re taking a pet fox for a walk….

One kettle of tepid water to melt ice to allow driver’s door to open
One kettle of water so passenger door would open
Two more to unfreeze the windscreen wipers.
All to allow me to drive to the Post Office to collect the parcel that they couldn’t deliver because the drive was frozen 🙁

Despite the recent arctic weather conditions our Strelitzias are coming into flower early this year, but even so the one at the northern end of our ‘Conservatory in the Sky’ is about 3 weeks behind its partner at the opposite end.

Another wander down the South Tyne riverbank behind our village late afternoon in sunny calm crisp conditions. Overnight temperature dropped to -8 overnight and didn’t rise above - 2 all day, consequently river edges have frozen, river sill higher and faster flowing than usual after all the rain earlier last week price would be more extensive.

On a fine and bright winter’s afternoon Exmoor beckoned, so we headed up via Dulverton, across the moor to Porlock Hill overlooking the Bay.

Then parked up on the Luccombe Estate access road opposite the old Culbone Inn for a bracing walk down to the ancient St Beuno’s Church and harbour. If you’ve got the legs to do the walk, (and get back up the hill!), I can recommend it. It’s also more easily accessible via the South West Coast Path from nearby Porlock Weir. No decent photos of the church unfortunately, as it was so gloomy once the sun dropped behind the hills, but you’ll get an idea of its location and history, including that of the leper colony in the surrounding woodland, from these links:

Once we staggered back up to car and headed towards Exford we were however rewarded with a spectacular Exmoor sunset.

The last remaining Sound Mirror on the Roughs above the Royal Military Canal in Hythe. The older 20ft more bowl shaped mirror collapsed and wasn't repaired in 1987. These are historic monuments and around 100 years old and left to rot.

There are many more that are open to the public at various times on the gravel pits near the Lade between Littlestone and Greatstone on the coast near Dungeness. The site is now taken over by the RSPB. Location

The Lade Car-Park allows MH/Camper overnight parking. It's on P4N.
