I bought this book in a charity shop for 50p. Not yet been to France in the van. Didn't think I'd enjoy it, but I'm on page 37 and can't put it down, great read. Much recommended

Apparently it's a play on an old song by Sophie Tucker in 1929, the author points it out in the books introduction

It covers so much ground (I'm only on page 37)
Basically the French do so many things different to the rest of the Western world, it looks totally wrong to us but it works for the French and they wouldn't change it for the world.
A small example without writing 2 pages;
Les Soldes (The Sales)
The Police set the dates for the sales, usually Mid-January to Mid-February and Mid-June to Mid-July. To have a sale outside these dates requires the shop owner to apply for special approval from the Police. The rest of the year all retailers large and small can't so much as offer a rebate without facing the wrath of the law.
There are many examples which cover, greeting people, telling people your name, talking about what you earn, personal space etc
So many taboos, things which we'd take for granted are just unacceptable to French people but their reasons make sense when explained

Yes. A very interesting book with lots of insights into french attitudes on cultural and social values, and how these devoped historically.It’s quite dated by now so some of the stuff might be showing signs..
