5th gear AWOL

Just joined the Fiat 2.8 JTD fifth gear club.

I think bugger is the appropriate expression.

We'll see what's what when I can get it on a lift on Weds.

I half expect that the issue will be a Bearing?, It is a known fault, My Last Ducato. had the "box" out twice for virtually the same issue, (I lost 6th Gear not 5th). Fullers, Bless `em, put in a full new clutch pack too the second time! FOC. which in itself is not cheap!. And only 37K miles too.

This is a 2002 5 speed version. Box shouldn't need to come out as 5th is just an add on to the 4 speed box with it's own cover. It's very Heath Robinson. I spent ages researching the engine before getting it - should have researched the gearbox too. Mine is the last year they had this issue. After that Fiat used a proper 5 speed box.

My understanding is the later 5sp box was tougher. But then Fiat, "in their wisdom"?. decided that a 6th would be nice, and similar issues developed from that, including the Dread "Juddergate" issue!, to do with reverse!.

Hence, in part, why I now have a Full Auto Merc; based M-H!.

Delivery est 30th July. Ferry to UK booked 10th August. Should be fine .

All fixed. Local garage guy's dad is an ex Fiat gearbox guy so landed on our feet there. €300 including parts and oil. Not bad at all.
