I posted this information on every site that I know of that deals with RV's - last Monday morning - course, that was the day that Jim took 'Fun away on holiday - so I couldn't post it here.

However, I bring it to the attention of all American Fifth Wheel Owners - this 5'er was stolen from the UK (Warrington, Cheshire) on Sunday night / Monday morning this week. So just because you have a different way of towing your 'Caravan' don't think you are immune to the thieves!

Dick

It is a standard a KountryLite as supplied by Calder Leisure - one slide out - 26ft long - chassis number IA9AA0ZM014945.
Negative police reaction quote: "it is probably in Ireland by now and if so it is gone for good" and i thought in this days of counter terrorism all vehicles were photographed and licence plates recorded at port of exit also all travellers have a passport?

regards

This is a bit of a worry as I had always thought nicking my 5er would not be easy. Obviously this was planned, nicked to order?
Mine has a Tracker, from Tracker, fitted and I e-mailed them a week or so to ask them to check if it was working. i.e. "tell me where I am please".
Reply
Good morning,

Thank you for your email, I can confirm that the type of TRACKER unit you have is only located by the Police Forces and is only traced while in theft mode, unfortunately this is something of which we are unable to do unless the caravan has in fact been stolen. If you have any reason to believe the TRACKER unit in your caravan is not working please inform us as to why.
Regards
"Theft mode" is me ringing them and telling them it's been stolen!
My reply
"So there is no way of checking the unit if it is unservicable until it's too late?
The fact that I paid £400 for this unit and a further £400 for a licience seems a high price for something I don't know is working until it is stolen.
Are you saying that although you make these things you are unable to track them?
Please bear in mind that this is the second unit to be fitted, the first one stopped working, although I did not know this, and if I remember your engineer was using a device that could determine if the Tracker was working or not, not in this case.
After fitting the new unit he could then detect it and it appeared OK.
Also, what is the legal stand point if my vechicle is stolen and your second unit also does not work?
Regards"

Waiting for a reply on that one.

Who is Rolly

Dunno mate. Apparantly, he's a purchaser of the Big Pitch Guide but not sure if he's a member of any forums cos I'm trawling like hell as I type and I cant find anything.

Hi Zaskar - I have PM'ed you.

Jackomet - Rolly is the name of the owner of the stolen 5'er - who also happens to be a Member of the Big Pitch Guide - and we (Mo and I) are doing our utmost to notify all and sundry of the theft. We are also, of course, doing all we can to help find the 5'er by publishing the news as far and wide as we can.

I had the feeling that it would be very difficult to nick a 5'er when compared to a standard caravan - this has opened my eyes completely!

These things must be so very well planned, I feel really gutted for the owners, as for the police, why am I not surprised. I hope its well insured.

I don't know - stick the kingpin through the sun-roof, a bit of string on for a breakaway cable tie - and away you go!

No Problem - do it with a Golf GTI. :winky:

Glad we dont live too near the M62 anymore, as thieves are off before you know it. My brother had his house burgled last May whilst on holiday, thankfully. Gang had been watching his house for a while, and even had the gall to walk up his drive whilst he was there and he was on the phone to me at the time, saying they had lost their ball, drrrr. Yeah alright. Anyway they were after his wifes Audi A6 and they got it, as I say thankfully when they were on hol, because they had got a carving knife out of the drawer and the police said if they had of been in the house they would of used it if confronted. They drank his brandy and two bottles of wine and other alcohol and they were so drunk they crashed the car, ran off and it was by finger prints and dna they were caught, the police had waited a long time to nick them. The gang hail from Blackpool.

It would be interesting to know if there was any security on the 5ver. ie tracker, alarm, hitch lock, wheel lock.

Tracker

We have just ordered a Bunk House from Calder (expct delivery April 2010) and have been told by the insurance we need to have a tracker fitted. I now wonder why the police havent been able to track the stolen 5er if it had a tracker fitted.
What have the insurance said?
What make of tracker did you have fitted?
We were going to get Calder to fit the tracker as they seem to know about them. Have you any advice for us.

I am sorry, Funsters - I have been chasing this person for more details ever since he first informed me - alas - he doesn't seem to want to help any of us with further information.

I apologise for that fact - however, if nothing else, it has alerted all of us to the fact that 5'ers CAN be stolen - albeit probably by a specialist gang.

I have read this with interest so I thought I would chuck my opinion in :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

5'ers are big old boys and not the sort of thing that is easily missed, plus if you are a villain and hell bent on getting one then all you need to do is cruise around with your hitch enabled pick up until you find one. Or do you ???????:Eeek::Eeek:
So,lets suppose some "theoretical" villains find and steal one, they are just as likely to be stopped by the Police for being overloaded, over weight, towing dangerously should they happen upon something that is too heavy for the pick up, so they must IMHO be using something bigger as a tow vehicle, a mini artic or similar.
Now I travel around a bit and I can honestly say that I have never seen a 5'er parked up either in a lay by, roadside pull in, front garden, or anywhere else for that matter, so how did these villains know about this unit and where it was being kept.???

Kinda makes you wonder especially as moanddick are struggling to get more details, I think that if I had my 5'er stolen then I would be doing everything within my power to get it back/ assist in catching the villains........Wouldn't you????

Hi Rob I so totally agree with you - if it were ours we would be shouting from the roof tops as I said on another forum everyone would have known about it whether they wanted to or not :ROFLMAO:- every detail and mark ( I could easily give 20 or more pointers ) to look for and all the security measures I had in place would be made public. If you look around most 5'er are fairly individual in some way or another . Lets face it 5'ers are still a pretty rare breed and so very easily noticed - not exactly like trying to find a Ford Escort in a crowd is it. As the offically most watched nation in the world you have to ask what are they using the CCTV for apart from parking fines :Eeek: While I would hate to imply too much on here I would really love to know why the owners do not want a concerted effort by the vast caravan / motorhome /RV community to find either the 5'er or the thieves or ideally both - or to benefit from the obvious shortfall in his security methods.

Totally agree, I have just got mine and I also have had to have a Tracker fitted, Every Insurance company I asked for a quote stated that point so I assume that if it was insured it had a Tracker of some sort or other fitted.

The vast majority also stated that it also had to have an Alarm fitted mas well as a Tracker if it had not got one.

I have kept quiet on this whilst waiting for info, but seeing as im in the area that it was reported as being taken from i have heard of nothing going missing, I also know most of the official and unofficial storage places in and around this area as i had to look for storage when i got mine and only a couple of storage yards would entertain a 5ver. Ours is on one of them.(storage yard owners tend to let other yard owners know if they have had stuff stolen)
There is only one site where you could leave a van for any length of time and personally I wouldnt entertain/recommend it and nor would another local 5ver owner, and only 2, 5 van cl/cs sites, both within 2 miles of me
There has been nothing in the local rag and say/think whatever you will but no local taxi drivers have said they have seen one and they know we have one (we have a taxibus) if they had we would of been the first that they would of made some comment to either in the form of thought you had gone away or i saw one of them vans like you 've got. As they have done in the past( I know of 4 other 5vers in this area down to drivers asking wether we had sold ours cos they had seen one in so &so area).
If at any time my van got stolen i would be 'shouting from the rooftops' on all forums/local rags with all info that could help with the possible finding and return of it, especially in the area it went from

Re Tracker - it has always been my understanding that only Tracker can fit Trackers - ie you buy a car and ask for one, the garage get T to come out to them and then tell you 'Your vehicle is ready to collect, Sir'. (same as the whatever it is we have on the motorbikes - Jaws will know LOL!! - in that case they came here to our house)

Or you can have a retro-fit at home or elsewhere.

Just a question here; can the all-singing all-dancing versions of Tracker only be fitted to a thing which also has an integral engine? - and not therefore to a caravan or a 5-er?

In my few months of owning a 5ver I had a tracker that I demanded that I fitted myself rather than some fitter who would know no better than myself, its own battery is guaranteed to last a minimum of 2 yrs max of 4. Send back to supplier when they inform you that signal is getting weak. After the first period of storage I hooked up and within a few minutes of my connection I drove out of yard and before I had got 3/4 of a mile down the road my mobile phone rang from the tracking company to make sure it was me moving it,I've got to say I was very impressed. By the way if any one is interested it is from a company called Mtrack. Yearly subs similar price to most others and tested and backed by thatcham etc.

The tracker in our truck will alarm if the truck is moved without keys in (ign. turned on), How does a trailer's tracker know it's being knicked ?? Do you have to arm/disarm it??

The Tracker I am having fitted alarms if it is moved 100 yards, It has a 100 yard zone around it when parked up and set.

If I forget to set it I can phone the monitoring company and they can set it or turn it off whichever way.

The battery lasts up to 1 year but is also charged from on board batteries so it is 1 year after the onboard batteries run flat.

It can be moved from Unit to Unit or Sold on.

The Insurance company wanted an alarm and Tracker fitted so this has both.
