I want to instal a double socket under a bench, right beside where the mains power comes in to the van. Is it a simple matter of adding a junction to the mains cable in the van, or is there more to it?
Pardon my electrical ignorance.

There should be an RCD circuit breaker somewhere, it will probably be a white box with two or three "switches" on it. You need to wire the socket in downstream of this. There could well be some sort of junction box near the RCD device which you wire into.

There are a few other issues such as using the right cable - if you have any doubts about doing the job ask a qualified electrician. :)

If you burn the MH down because of your wiring the insurance might quibble about paying up. :(

While it is possible to do as described it would have no safety apart from whatever the outside supply has (which would be unknown to you) and possibly a serious hazard potential.
Wiring it to the feed to an existing socket would ensure your on board trip system is protecting the circuit.
As always with mains electricity, if you are not completely competent you should get some expert help to ensure the installation is safe.
