Has anyone got the 2022 Fiat 180 bhp with the 9 speed auto on either a 4500 or 5000kg chasis?
If so just wondered what your experience has been thus far with regard to driving, pulling power and MPG compared to what you had previously?
May be swapping to a van with above and would be interested in any feedback.
Thanks

I can only comment on ours it is the 160 with auto, last van was the 180 with comfortmatic both on 4500kg it is like day and night, we ordered the 180 but not available part way through order so had to wait even longer or choose the 160, only low miles yet but at the moment showing high twenties as an average and the power select buttons work really well so very pleased at the moment I assume the 180 would be even better

And that will improve as engine gets some miles on it.(y)

160ps engine, ZF 9 speed auto, 4250Kg rated, almost 30mpg constantly when driven in eco mode. Not yet felt the need to change up to sport mode at all. Drives very smoothly, is reasonably responsive and I'm really enjoying the driving to be honest.

Do you have links as I must have missed them?

Have the auto box coming with the 160 engine in an Adria and have been running a similar 8 speed ZF auto and 180 engine in a VW Amarok for 9 years with nothing but praise for it.

They up the torque by a lot on the auto box compared to manual and it's starting to look like it may be too much for the engine, the box is fine
Ahh, gotcha, understood, OK, one to keep an eye on (fingers crossed)

Likewise, I have had an 8 speed ZF auto in my 3.0ltr Jeep and it's been fanbloodytastic, which is why I was excited to buy the 9 speed auto on our new van.

Just a low murmer at the moment but:

Almost meet your requirements.
2021 Adria Twin pvc.
I have the 180 with the 9 speed auto.
So easy to drive.
Van plated at 4250.
3 drive mode options to choose from, Power, Drive and Eco.
I use Drive mode, 30mpg.
Max torque of 450nm is achieved at 2000 rpm.

Hardly!

No different to any other manufacturer. It's gone bang and it will be replaced under warranty.

What about the 1000s of other 180s on the road that have completed 100s of thousands of trouble free miles.

If you thought like that you wouldn't buy anything.

Thanks for that. I remember that thread but didn’t equate the one-off catastrophic engine failure with any general trend, and I don’t believe the OP has yet come back with a reason for the blow-up? Could be anything, and as they were cruising on the motorway when it went pop I doubt the engine and drivetrain would have been stressed.

Fair enough - but I wouldn't buy one just yet. There's another thread somewhere that I can't find about a new motorhome that was eventually rejected due to engine going bang.

diesels produce most of their torque at about 1500-2000 rpm or motorway cruising speeds so just accelerating for a hill could cause it.

The auto box on the 180bhp engine produces 20% more torque than the manual box and it's at about 1500rpm

Best to keep in eco mode to limit torque??

The 8 speed box is a totally different design. It's much larger, generally for RWD/AWD vehicles, designed to sit in the transmission tunnel behind a longitudinal engine and can cope with up to 1000bhp. It's pretty bullet proof.

The 9 speed is much smaller and is designed to squeeze alongside a transverse 4 cylinder engine. It had a rocky start, but I think most issues have been sorted with the box now. It's supposed to be pretty reliable.

As I said earlier around 40000 + ducatos sold in the Uk every year and we have one confirmed failure it’s a bit of a storm in a tea cup I expect if you looked at other manufacturers they will have similar failure rates🤔
And we don’t really have confirmation of cause to date?

What a load of tosh, two means getting a reputation. Needs a bit more than that. They've sold more than 100,000 in europe alone since 2020. That's not including the many variants of the engine used by other manufacturers. We've done 16,000 miles this year running around 4200kgs with the nine speed and 160. We've used all of the modes, especially power when running up large hills overtaking lorries. Like the long one in and out of the mountains at Granada.

Not bothered about fuel consumption to be honest, more interested in trying to enjoy motorhoming around europe, with life being far too short.

One thing we've noticed is the oil consumption. It's been topped up on three occasions with around a litre each time. In addition it uses a fair amount of adblue when you put your foot down.

I'd but another new one tomorrow.

Ours did use a couple of ltr in the early day but four years on it’s not using much and I agree with you comments entirely we have owned three Fiat Motorhomes and Two cars and had very few problems mechanically with the engines. 👍😊😊

The 180 produces a lot more torque than your 160 which will inevitably put more stain on the engine. It may be tosh but I'll stick with my 3.0l even though it provides a lot less torque than the 2.3 180

So I had a 180bhp Comanche 5000kgs with Comformatic box for 3 years with no issues whatsoever and 60mph motorway cruising returned 22/3 mpg at more or less 1950/2000 rpm

My new Rapido. i1090 5000kgs with 9 speed ZF box is like a breath of fresh air, it’s only done 1800 miles atm, 60 mph at 1500rpm is so far returning 25+ mpg and really does seem to have more torque available.

It’s early days yet but up to now i’m loving it, much nicer to drive as well.

Al 👍

Edit, i’m not keen on having to use adblue, that for me is an absolute joke, both my motorhomes afaik have identical engines so why one and not the other 🤔

Thanks for the feedback. Very encouraging, especially the improved mpg, which Im always sceptical about from manufacturers.
Aside the couple of unfortunate incidents with failures on new vehicles, but I suppose Fiat expect a limited amount of issues due to component failure etc. Not nice for the people concerned, I know I would devastated having spent all that money, but hopefully resolved to their satisfaction.

My 180 van has done 8500 miles, I've only had to add 3/4 of a litre of oil so far.
Although Fiat advise that the 1st service is at 30k or 2 years, I am going to get the oil, filter and fuel filter changed when the van is 1 year old.
I've never had a new vehicle which has not had an oil change etc at 1 year old.

I've not had a new vehicle for the last 30 years where I did need to put oil in between services. I'd be rather worried if I'd put 3/4 litre in 8500 miles, especially as modern diesels tend to have the reverse problem with oil levels rising over time due to the biodiesel accumulating in the oil.

The 2.3 180bhp has a uprated crank, pistons and turbo that's why it's extra pound notes and capable of handling the extra torque.

The last two Ducato's we have had use around a litre in 8000 miles.

Sounds about right to me, my Volvo 2.1 VEA diesel with 130k uses the same and is tugging a 1963 LR S2a on a trailer for a significant number of miles so works hard. Should my van actually arrive I would be happy with that after bedding in!

Sorry, not worried at all.
Never had an increase in oil level.
I think all engines will use some oil.

I have a 2.3 180 with Comfortmatic on a 5000kg tag axle. I was apprehensive about changing from my previous 3 litre with Comfortmatic but, if I wanted a new van, that’s what I had to have.

Have to say I was and remain pleasantly surprised. Whilst the 3 litre was excellent, the 2.3 180 is, in my opinion, smoother and quieter, and it has no trouble pulling 5000kgs. It’s no sports car but if you want to race around, buy a sports car and book B&Bs 😂

So far, 17000 miles and I’ve never yet put oil in it. It was serviced at 2 years old and the oil changed of course… It’s now 3 years old.

Just returned from a 3500 mile round trip to southern Spain and it averaged 25.4mpg over the whole trip. Best I got after a day on the motorway was 28.6mpg and the worst after a day in the hills was 23.6mpg, and these are my calculation full tank to full tank. The on-board trip computer was very similar.

Overall, no complaints.
