We stayed at a very pleasant vineyard/farm at St Jean d'Ardieres (before Lyon, near Macon) it was free, if you wanted electric it was 5 euros, a very good overnight stop. We did the wine tasting but there was no pressure to buy (although we did buy a couple of bottles) we were there in January a couple of years ago. Would definitely stay there again if in the area

a couple of photos from the Beaune aire, including the seemingly bonkers machine to buy a token to use in the machine next to it o_O

we made full use of space available in the overflow area, there is a limit of 7m on the web site, but use of over hang and pavement worked well, but German next door seemed upset, came out looked at me, looked at my MH, looked at line on ground, looked back at me, went inside slamming his door several times then out again TV or radio on stupidly loud, no idea why he was miffed, other than he wished he had parked where I did maybe

dome satellite working fairly well until it snows harder then the picture goes

many thanks @FIDGET and @Oscar for the site options, next time maybe, too dark to move from here now, but will review where Macon is on map for a possible option tomorrow (y) we plan to go right round France this trip so will be returning up the west coast in 2 weeks (y)

Moved on to Beaune today, a nice free aire, close to town centre, right alongside a medium sized Carrefour amazing popular for the time of year, but this is now pretty much on the main route north / south to the riviera

more or less as we arrived it started to snow, so all we have done is pop to Carrefour and back, but that has dented todays budget, might need to do a running total to see how we are doing

The run down to Beaune out of Dijon is a complete mass of vineyards, my wine ignorance tells here I don't know what this region is known for, but we have bought a bottle of local red to have with dinner, plus the region seems to specialise in making the fruit licquers we like, so have indulged in a ginger one to try

tomorrow we really need to sort some water, all the aires we have used have either had no facilities of the water has been off, 2 garages have been frozen up and not useable, this aire has a bonkers set up with a machine you have to buy a token from to then put into another machine that dispenses water and electricity, but it looks complicated, not sure if the €4,20 covers everything inc electrics that you cant possibly used parked on he dump area

May still not bother and make more effort to top up on our travels tomorrow, we can dump for free on a drive over gulley here

Back in MH have discovered a couple of Norwegian cans of lager in the back of fridge, 4.7 alcohol but tasteless so have added a splash of ginger licquer that seems to have improved it

Expenditure today me at boulangerie €11.70 got carried away with the tart, €75 more on diesel, €66 in Carrefour, didn't even buy much but alcohol doesn't come cheap :)(y)

€143 in one day not looking good for the budget o_O cooked chicken for dinner, I will fry some onions, peppers and add in some rice to accompany, washed down with a local red wine (y)(y)

snow doesn't look to be doing enough to worry about and forecast for tomorrow is dry and possible sun (y)

Tomorrow we divert towards the gorge du Verdon, (I think we do anyway, not looked at maps carefully yet, might be Lyon tomorrow then divert on Sunday) Bev is already asking me to replan the route, but will see how it looks as we go (y)

Edit - Lola seems fixed firing nice solid poos again  moved on to French dog food, will see how that goes, but still topped up with tuna and or scrambled eggs, do you know she is well spoilt :)

David not too bothered about your budget, as long as lola is ok, and Bev of course, hows the roads

We were given walnuts to eat with the red wine! Really nice (y)

Hi David , just a thought there's a couple of nice aires ,towards Lyon( just a bit west ) Roanne aire beside canal or Villerest nice terraced aire above a lake.

Just read this post again, thought it said near here, looking now to see if they work for tonight :)(y)

Water is going to be our crisis though, even thinking I might need to pay for the machine here but then would still not know if it was frozen or even turned off before paying o_O

this is looking good for tonight, serviced ex municipal site, seems to have all we need, provided satellite can see through the trees for the rugby looks perfect :)

we already have the pass, we used one of their sites on the canal du midi this time last year (y)
If you go in and keep left down towards the river and park longways to the river you can get tv reception. It’s the only place on the site we could pick it up.

@Taran_Las thanks for the link Phil, worth looking just for the music (y)

Not really our kind of thing and probably too cold here even for those that do like them :)

It is sunny today though as hoped for on the long term forecast, first day we have woken up to a positive temp even if only +1C :)

Off for some bread (y)

Hi David,

I forgot to mention the Chateau is also a Grand Cru vineyard with tasting and sales. They allow overnight stays for campingcars (no services). Fiat Abarth car museum with 36 cars, Motorbike museum, Model aircraft, tanks & military displays, Fire engine museum, Fighter aircraft engine museum, Viticulture machinery museum, hovercraft, fighter aircraft and conference centre. What more could Bev want?;):D

Safe travels.

Phil.

Could you get water and dump waste? I am going to look for it on line but nothing better than a real review (y)
At the time we were there, it was only a small set up (5 places on gravel) but there was 1 toilet and we got water there, don't think we dumped the grey whilst we were there, but in our Camperstop book (it is a 2015 one, so don't know if it's up to date) it showed a grey dumping facility, it was an interesting place with lots of old tractors, the downside is it's quite remote (@3 kms from village) but we felt really safe, the Patron closed the gates at night & was very helpful and friendly.
We found it in the Camperstop book (but it may be in others)

Afternoon all, we have opted for the Villefrance-sur-Saone newly converted municipal site, now run by the Pass Etape group, we used a brand new site of theirs on the canal du midi last year, this one is not up to the same standard, but 13€ inc electrics and free wifi, had to try three posts before finding power though

I think the site has been under water recently, we are very close to the river, which will make a nice walk in a bit (y), but there is something very bare about the site, no leaves on the trees will not be helping but the chain link fence round the edge feels rather prison like somehow having been used to town centre aires

Had turned on dome satellite before stopping, that locked on first spin, but says it has no signal cant show any channels :( even tried a rescan it finds 456 channels but then displays No signal still :( shame but not the end pf the world, odd though at only 85 miles up the road we hd a good signal picture (when it wasn't snowing at least)

not to worry the wifi seems half decent I will watch the rugby live on ITV via interweb :)(y)

that is all we have done today though 85 miles, only expense so far 2 pain and some butter (y) but main reason for stopping was to watch the rugby, actually the other really major benefit from this site, we now have water, will be showering on board as all facilities closed down for winter, but we can then dump and refill before leaving tomorrow :)(y)

will walk and take some photos in a bit, wouldn't want to leave you all guessing what its like :)

@DavidG58 I remember my first experience of your posts was when you explained your aversion to credit card barriered Aires.

Gosh how you have matured in your Aire skills. Not only a barrier but a barrier with a separate french card system and it holds no fear for you (y)

Hope you enjoy a mega shower and streaming the rugby.

@Jenben nice one Carolyn, wish I could claim all or even some of the glory, that was Bev's skill, she sorted it last year so saw no reason to interfere today , really good news the €13 has gone on her debit card, so not even going on the daily budget :LOL:

rugby streaming has failed :( couldn't even place a bet as not in UK, but rang youngest at home to sort that, luckily I got more luck this week than last, trouble is Ireland have done just a bit too well, great score, bet the match was a good watch as well o_O

just off for a shower before the England match, live updates are interesting but not really exciting

no need or point really Phil, they do seem to run quite a few aires these days, but if you turn up to one they issue a card through the auto entry toll booth in return for €5 then let you in for the normal fee (y) they are all unmanned though, but do offer a half decent phone support in reasonable hours, I think 09:00 - 24:00

This is our second one the other was virtually brand new, I think in summer with the bar and restaurant open this would be a lovely site, it is just very stark in winter as most places are I guess :)

looking for a town centre aire for tomorrow near Grenoble with bar and TV for the rugby :)(y)

any tips @FIDGET (y) they seem very thin on the ground around there
