My motorhome is a 2017 Rapido 10000 DFH (tag) on a Fiat engine

So i am hopong some of you might be able to shed some light on this issue as it is quite baffling.

My MH has been in Newark for a week getting some warranty work completed and was due to be dropped back yesterday (Sat) after being completed. The issue is that when they stopped around the corner to get some fuel the MH refused to start. Key in the ignition, all lights come on but when you turn the key there is nothing there only the spring part where it should then turn over.No starter motor nothing. If it as if the immobiliser has kicked in but then not disengaged. Tried locking the MH and unlocking but same, left it for 10mins still the same. Eventually they called me and came to pick me up and i then tried basically what they tried again but still nothing. So i called fiat assist and they were on there way but they would be up 90mins. every 5 mins i was trying the key again and after i would say after about an hour this time i tried the key and it started. Nothing different done, no more lights on the dash but it started.

I have the following fitted to the vehicle over and above the factory spec

Growler inc GSM Part(Vanbitz)

Tracker from Trackstar (Vanbitz) this comes with a transponder that sits on the dash (like a fat credit card), if not on the dash trackstar call me to say vehicle moved. I have also asked Trackstar and they have said there device does not interfere with the vehicles immobiliser and they cannot activate it without auth from police.

E&P Jacks (Mick SAP)

I do have a 2nd key but it just a basic key as no option to lock or unlock the MH by pressing buttons as there is none. Can this key be tested to start the MH or is it just one to get you inside the vehicle as i may start carrying this key if it will actually start it.

Of course once it has started Fiatassist dont want to know and therefore dont want to attend which is fair enough. At the moment i have sent the vehicle back to Newark to get it sorted but i have a strange feeling they will just come back and say no fault found. I cannto risk driving this without it being fixed as if it happened abroad or on the motorway i cannot sit there for 60mins approx till it comes back to life.

Thoughts and suggestions, the vehicle is back at the dealers now but i am speaking with the customer services manager on Monday?

At a guess the starter motor has a poor contact and when it has heated up due to the transferred engine heat will not operate till it has cooled down.
It will need a good drive and then park somewhere convenient to see if it repeats the problem.

Thats a good suggestion as it does seem to happen after a long drive, they did stop just before getting fuel about 90mins before this but only for 20mins. I will mention this to them when i speak with them on Monday. Thanks

May sound strange but some type of rf interference?
Number of years ago I rode a motorbike. There was a spate of people giving off about their bikes not starting in filling stations. Wheeled bike away and hey presto bike would start.
Have a.vague recolllection that it was some type of interference with security systems.
Of course if yours does this on a regular basis I am talking b**locks lol

Been around the block a few times😉
As Dartagnan says I had a 4x4 when parked outside the dealership it simply wouldn't turn over after it's service.

Apparently a new phone or similar mast had been erected further down the road once moved by a few meters it was then fine.

Just about keys
If the Rapido is 2017 they leave the factory with three keys(2 remote controle keys 1 standard key.
Ask the dealer why you did not recieve the third key.
If no joy ring Rapido and ask if they no longer have three.
My last mercedes had a problem with the key spare key and it was fine.

Going to be very hard to prove about the interference nothing was moved inside the Motorhome aside from the trackstar thingy which was only moved into the arm rest but even after this wasn't moved it still didn't start so I don't think it is this. I will ask the dealer about the 3rd key as I def only have 2 and on the last MH I only had 2 and they were the same I.e 1 proper and 1 skinny one. I just have a feeling they won't find the issue and it will just be sent back as is which won't help me. If the recovery were quicker they would see and I would stand a better chance of getting the fault fixed.

Totally unhelpful to you @zac but have you thought about giving up motorhoming and buying a pair of walking shoes
... but then probably the sole would fall off:LOL:. Not having much luck again but I do hope you get it sorted.

My son worked for Renault on the IOM and he was always being called out to M&S multi storey car park, for non starting Renault scenics. Apparently, the fluorescent lights in the CP were very close to the roof of the Scenic and it resulted in the immobiliser being activated after being parked for a while.

Bad luck seems to be following me lately, i fell down the bloody stairs friday and thought i broke my ankle,4 hours at a&e and they still dont know if i have or havent as no expert docs around as all gone home for the weekend so only normal general docs on. no idea what that means but have to wait till Monday when a specialist can look at the xray. Then got home from that and there was water pissing through the ceiling down stairs. Turns out the shower pump was leaking, trying to explain to salli how to turn off the water and open all the taps was not easy. Now this with the darn MH, hopefully thats the 3rd thing and there will be no more :(

How do i go about getting another remote key fob that does the unlocking and starts the engine as i def only have 1 set that does this? Is this direct from Fiat or is there any alternative?

At least i can try another set of keys then if it happens again and they cant find the fault.

You could try Timpson shoe repair as they cut keys and some places have a key reader that will place all the info onto the new key.

Will they do the whole lot as i have read some conflicting info around this that only fiat can do the remote fob part?

Its worth asking in your local shop.
I was talking to one of the Timpson guys and at the time there was only a couple of makers they couldn't do and one was BMW/Mini.

Worth a try as I guess there would be a big saving.

Tried timpson to cut a a dumb key for a smart. Didn't need the fob as it was just for the steering lock.
They couldn't do it but local specialists could and also fit the gubbins. Give them a try.

By a local specialist do you mean a locksmith or fiat themselves?

Thanks

I used a local specialist as Timpson were unable to even cut the key, not even having the blank. If I had gone to Smart which is Mercedes, I would have needed the V5 and wait nearly a week.
Had I opted for the fully operational key at the specialist, they
would have had it done in about 15 minutes.

(By specialist I mean a security and locksmith, not necessarily on the high street)

Timpson's wanted about 120 quid to supply a new remote key for my Renault, a neighbour recommended a guy who has a cabin on the local Homebase car park and he did it for just under 80 quid.

That sounds good, not seen one in our homebase but then i have not really looked but everything is worth exploring. I have seen them online where you can buy the whole device for around £1000 but that is a bit extreme unless i go into the locksmith business or crime :)

For info Fiat want £306 for a spare remote key fob, i have so far called 2 locksmiths that are supposed to deal with the automotive industry and neither can do the Fiat one. Waiting on one last one that is local else it will be Fiat directly and they said they will need all current keys to the vehicle as they will no longer work once this new one has been sorted so they will need to redo those as well. That's a lot of money for a key which i think you should be supplied with from new, always had 2 for the car complete keys very strange they scrimp on something as important as this. I have also emailed Rapido asking the question so hopefully will get an answer from them as well.

I usually fill up the MH in Sainsburys where they broke down and never had a problem, very strange it happened there. I cant help but think this is related to how long it is driven before it kicks in, maybe as someone said an over heat issue or something similar.
