On the top of the dashboard in front of the pop-up clipboard is a plastic bubble covering a connector block, any advice on what this does please?

Not 100% sure, but apparently on vans with factory radio nav the GPS receiver is beneath the dash panel in that area.

My Volvo has a sensor in a similar location which monitors heat from the sun entering the windscreen and modifies the operation of the automatic climate control accordingly. ACC is an option on the Ducato, so it might be that the sensor block is one of those items that is fitted regardless.

Thanks for the replies but I think it's the receiver for the alarm.

Alarm sensor wouldn't need to be visible.
I'm with Auto lights which would need a visible sensor.
My car has a sensor in the same place for lights, my other car it's for auto wipers.

The auto wiper sensor is mounted on the windscreen next to the interior mirror if fitted. It could well be the dusk sensor for automatic headlights.

It doesn't look like anything to do with Fiat. What sort of connectors does it cover? The easy and most obvious answer is why not take a look underneath the dashboard?

Itā€™s to do with the radio, when I changed my radio it came out with it, I think itā€™s for the gps on a sat-nav which was on the radio..

It is a Fiat part. This is the one on my van. Not a light sensor, having looked at it more closely. I'm sticking with my original opinion of GPS antenna for the VP2 radio nav, as I recall reading a technical document that showed the antenna immediately behind the radio unit and under the dash in that area.

OK, believe this is the "definitive" answer.(y)

It's the solar detection sensor for the automatic climate control that detects infrared radiation and adjusts the cab temperature accordingly. Note, this is not the same as air conditioning.
If you don't have it fitted it's as the photos I posted above.

Thanks all. Reading all the replies I think ours is the flux density capacitive resistance modulator.

1st prize goes to Gellyneck

I found the document. It's a single zone solar radiation sensor for automatic air conditioning. Without AAC, it just plugs the otherwise unsightly hole in the dashboard moulding.
