I had loads of problems with a bad engine earth connection some years ago whilst touring Germany, sometimes started, sometimes gave the impression of a flat battery, eventually traced it to a bad earth connection.

Just in case it happens to me, ducato 2002, where is the engine earth? Can't say I've ever noticed it.

Stick a jump lead from the battery negative to a clean metal point on the engine and see if that helps ?

Odd that turning it off is also difficult.

Does ignition lock/key feel ok?

On our 2004 Inca (Peugeot based) it's on one of the bolts securing the gearbox to the engine, easily seen from underneath.

It’s a common problem with these vans, had the same issue not starting but resolved by replacing, cleaning g up the earth straps and adding a few more which resolved the issue.

I had a similar problem recently, the earth strap is tucked away down the side of the engine block near the gearbox, very difficult to get to so I just ran another separate earth lead from under the gearbox up to the fuel filter housing on the bulkhead, solved the problem straight away. Hope that helps.
