Hi all, when you let off the accelerator in 5th & 6th gear I get a whirring noise from the gearbox. It disappears when putting the clutch down. Can it be fixed or is it a case of living with it, is it causing any damage, how long will it go on? It’s a pvc with 90k. Tia.

Have you described that correctly? You lift off on the accelerator and you get a whirring noise. Depress the clutch, presumably with foot off accelerator, and the whirring vanishes?
If this is the case the sound seems to come on overrun. I'm not sure what that means but someone else might. :)

It's fairly obvious that it's a gearbox issue, get it sorted before it lets go completely. Whirring bearings are just like cracked tyres, they don't heal up they just get worse till they fall apart altogether.

Get it sorted ASAP, we had a similar issue on an ex-ambulance I converted, by the time we got home we only had 3rd gear (only roadside assistance, no recovery)!

would have thought thrust bearing would be more noisy under load of pressing clutch I would think input shaft bearing would be more likely

..and a worn thrust bearing would whine in every gear, not just 5th and 6th, definitely gearbox related.

a classic sign of the 5th gear running dry and beginning to fail. cheaper to get it fixed now when you can choose where to get it fixed

Judging by the op avatar the van in question wears the "diamond of doom" (it's a Renault) and has six forward gears. The under lubricated fifth gear issue you allude to was generally considered to be a failing in Fiat/Shitron/Peugeot vans of the x230 range (1994-2001).

As Dave says, the noise is from your gearbox I'm afraid, the longer you leave it the more expensive it gets.

If it was the thrust bearing the noise would be worse when the clutch is depressed as that is the only time the bearing has to work hard.

Sorry, old picture, old van. I did state at the top what year and it was a Citroen. Thanks all for the info. Sounds as tho it’s going to be expensive. Maybe cheaper in the long run for a recon box?

My apologies, yes you did. Being a 2008 makes it x250 and my comment regarding the supposed poor lubrication of fifth doesn't apply to this gearbox. It is almost certainly a bearing in the box failing so the sooner you get it done the better.

Hi Dave, is this something you could rectify with the gearbox? I was going to get in touch about a price for cruise control and think maybe get both done at same time?

A worn thrust bearing may rattle a little if it's badly worn but will only whine and whirr when under load....ie: pedal down....and if properly adjusted, until pedal pressure is introduced it will barely be turning.
Not these days: release bearings are run with zero clearance & preferably a light pre-load to prevent rattle and finger wear.

Sorry I only just saw this. I don't currently do clutch/gearbox jobs but I can sort the cruise control for you. You need a gearbox specialist to sort the transmission noise.
