Well it looks like I've "killed" my second ever clutch as the work van has started squealing and smelling. I thought it was the alt belt squealing at first but it only does it when clutch pedal is depressed. So today I have a cruise control to install, a rusty bulk gas tank to remove and an Alugas gas system to install instead, a wiring issue in a Transit Welfare van to sort then my clutch to replace. Some days I almost wish I was an accountant :)

£846.16 plus Vat to replace clutch. Timing belt etc and the water pump. I think that is a very reasonable price.

That is reasonable but unless the water pump is leaking or has play I wouldn't bother replacing it. Its not driven by the timing belt so even if it fails later it won't affect the timing belt (pig of a job to do as well because of a secondary pipe connected to it at the back of the engine hidden behind the alternator and under the exhaust manifold).
