hi all , recently picked up an old 1995 hymer with the 2.5 ltr turbo engine, which is quite smokey on start up but clears up after a while .is it a common problem with these engines ?
I was thinking the turbo seals are past it from sitting idle ?
no problem with driving and pulls 5th gear easily ,
it has low mileage 83k klm for it's age .
question is, do these engines share many parts with the non turbo engines ,as I,ve an old Peugeot van (1998) with the none turbo2.5 ltr engine and wonder if I could keep it for spares if needed ?

thanking you in advance for any info , jimmy

If the smoke stinks of Diesel it's most likely the heater plugs - one or more may have failed. Smoke that smells of burned oil may be from the turbo. If it is oil smoke then any action (or none) is best judged from the point of view of oil consumption - is oil consumption acceptable? At 50K miles the engine should just about be run in.

thanks tony , oil consumption is very little if at all. it does smell of diesel alright ,
when starting the glowplug light only lights for a second ,maybe that has something to do with it .

I would start with a full service... oil and all the filters..
The smoking may just be a bit of over fuelling with the cold start device.. if it's an issue get a diesel specialist to set pump and service the injector's. .
If it's starting OK I would think the glow plugs are ok..
One some older engines I've played with the plugs are on for longer than the light stays on on the dash .. I'm assuming it's an indirect injection engine..

it appears to be common with these engines, we have the same unit and we get smokey startups and the first few minutes of driving can be a bit smokey, but it soon clears and runs smoke free. Ours is just over 61k miles and burns no oil.
I'd love to find what causes the smoke so I can get rid of it, but I have found one of Wynnes diesel smoke reducer products seems to clear a lot of it. Ours now starts with a puff of smoke then clears after a few seconds.
As to the cold start light, that's normal. It will show for a split second when the temperature outside is above 0, below that and the cold start light comes on for a good while, then will go on and off for a while when the engine is running.
Also, there are no glowplugs, just one flame heater in the inlet manifold and a control unit above the vehicle battery.
Sorry, can't answer about spares.
