My van, Fiat chassis, 2.3 multijet, is in the sick bay. Last week as we were heading off, not too far, the battery warning light came on, engine ran as normal. When we stopped I realised the idle speed had been increased by the engine management system to about 1250 rpm.

On checking the battery levels it was apparent the batteries had not been charging from the alternator, the solar panel was giving enough charge to keep things going. We were only 50 odd miles from home and made the return journey without incident or any change in the problem.

Took her along to our local Auto-Electrics workshop this morning and await the findings. More posts later.

alternator kaput or perhaps just its drive belt slack or snapped. The increase in revs may be accounted for due to the lack of pad from the alternator.

New alternator coming tomorrow ££?
Prices on eBay vary wildly.
Say: £100 for an alternator, £15 (?) new belt , hour or so labour to fit, plus an hour to troubleshoot the problem
I'd expect the bill to be around £250

Got the van back today, total bill £263 so you weren't far off though the make up was different. Alternator £159 + vat, 2 hours labour at £30 +vat. All in all I'm happy and I would use the same place again.

Auotsparks, Stranraer for info.

I think anyone in the UK would be happy with £30+vat /hour labour !! (y)
My friend in Devon pays £60+vat just over the border in Somerset.
He enjoys problems here where the main dealers rate is 36,60€+vat.
