I want to hardwire a small 12v gadget in my motorhome. It is going near the vehicle (not leisure) fusebox. I am taking the +12v from a spare fuse. There is a 240v socket nearby. Would it be ok to connect the -12v to the 240v earth? I.e. Are the 240v earth in the socket and the vehicle 12v "ground" common?

No, use the vehicle to confirm a circuit, NOT the domestic circuit.

There should be plenty of places on the chassis to get a good earth.

Do a continuity check between the chassis and the earth pin. If they are at zero ohms then you are ok to use it in theory.

However in practice. If your new connection falls off or becomes disconnected and starts flopping about... The second it touches the live wire while on hookup you may at best get a big bang and some smoke... If you are using it at the time it may be the last time you take a short cut such as this :p

As others have said, if it were me I would be either running a proper return or finding a point on the chassis.

There is however a chance that the 240 earth is not grounded to the chassis.

You'll also need to confirm the size of fuse your running the power from and the amount you intent to draw through it.

Many thanks Jezport, PP Bear and Gromett. I didn't think the 250V would be grounded to the chassis but always worth a check. I'm going to use the 12v accessory socket now instead of hard wiring
