I'm new
Hello all

I'm looking for a little advice regarding 12v accessories. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have 4 devices within the MH cab which all require a 12v supply, and all of which don't use a cigarette type charger, they all require hard wiring into the 12v system.

Dashcam 1.5A
Satnav 2A
GPS Tracker 1.5A
Reversing Camera 2A

Now, I'm not one for wires everywhere, so I would like to hard wire all the terminals into a switched (Ignition) via the fuse box.

My first question is, is it safe to wire this amount of devices into a fuse box and secondly how is it done? I've been told to wire the devices in parallel?

I have a basic knowledge of 12v electrics, but I wanted to gain advice before I started. I was looking at using a piggyback fuse, but not sure if its safe.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Regards

I have satnav, dash cam and tyre pressure monitor all hard wired via piggyback fuse adapters. Works ok for me, used fuses that are only live with ignition on, haven’t had any problems so far.

Must all be wired in parallel or none will work. A single fuse suitably rated would be ok though I would fuse them separately so a failure of one fuse wouldn't put out everything

I would be surprised if they are all 12v.

Dashcam... USB
Satnav... . USB
Tracker..... USB

USB = 5v
Satnav could be 12v if its older than Noah.

Thank you for the help. Much appreciated.

Can I have all 4 devices linked to one piggybank? Is that safe?

Thanks

You need to state exactly what you're trying to do. All those devices require 5v and each will have its own cig lighter power supply. If you are asking whether they can all be connected to one multi-outlet cig lighter strip the answer is Yes they can. The cig lighter strip can be plugged into an existing cig lighter socket, which will have a more than adequate fused supply, and each of your devices will have its own fuse inside its own supplied cig lighter plug. If however you're asking about hard wiring then you need different advice.

Thanks for your advice.

I intend to hard wire all 4 devices into the fuse box using a switched live. The devices as mentioned above do not have cigarette adapters. All have pos and neg wires. So, I order to fit all 4 devices via the vehicle fuse box I was going to use the piggyback connectors, but not sure if I could attach all 4 devices onto one piggy back, or to split them, 2 piggy backs and 2 devices each?

Thank you for all your help

No point in having a tracker that is switched off when the ignition is off. It should be on at all times.

Mine is definitely NOT powered by a 5v USB adaptor, it is in fact wired to both main & leisure batteries via two diodes (and separate fuses) so that either can be disconnected and still leave the tracker active.

Never seen any of these devices which run directly from a 12v supply with the exception of Satnav many years ago before the advent of USB and rev/rear view cameras.

Unfortunately, you will have used your free posts so won't be able to let us know when you hard wired them in it released the magic smoke from the devices.

before wiring any of those to anything i would be checking the necessary voltages for each item or your going to have a lot of melted units

CHECK the voltage required.
Piggy back off a suitable supply fuse or back of cig lighter
Put in an inline fuse then connect it all together with a wago connector.

You still have a couple of posts left, why not put some links up of the kit you have. I personally am intrigued. Mine are a mixture of USB and Ciggy plugs. Personally I prefer that each item has a separate plug rather than being hard wired. So it can be removed or replaced. I have hard wired via fuses two ciggy/USB banks on the dash one via ignition the other live all the time via a switch.
These sit neatly under a shelf unit which holds most of the kit and all wiring is bundled under the shelf. I currently run seven different items from these.

You're correct - the Tracker could be 12v. The rest definitely not.
