I’m hoping to go explore Europe for 12 months starting around the end September/ October time, I’ve been doing some research and know all the usual things like legal requirements on what to take but was wondering from people’s past experiences what you would consider necessary for such a trip.

Have a plan "B" ready in case its 90 days .
After a couple of months have a audit of what you needed/used and look at unloading the rest :)

Thanks tacr2man, I’ve already taken the 90 day issue into account if Brexit goes ahead. How important are toll cards etc and which should I get if needed. Are there other things I need to be applying for other than the green card and IDP?

Toll cards are not important for France Spain and Portugal as the non toll roads are OK.

And you’ll need health ins for a year too....

Breakdown cover...?

Tags for the toll motorways are very convenient. The Italian company Telepass do one which covers Spain, Portugal, France and Italy but buying one on their website is more or less impossible unless you live in Italy as I discovered yesterday. :) I have two from Emovis (https://www.emovis-tag.co.uk) but they don't cover Italy, which is a pain as Italy is the one place you do want to use the motorways if you want to go anywhere. I also use them in France but accept it is expensive, around £80 to drive across France east to west on our last trip. Even if you don't want to travel long distances in France on the toll roads there are sometimes places where it makes sense to use them for a short distance. You will see lots of rural places going cross-country in France and if you are not in a hurray the 80kph speed limit on the roads and the 30kph limits in lots of towns and villages won't trouble you. :)
