If you are past the date at 4b your licence is invalid, simple as.

If you are so sure that your licence remains valid, don't bother renewing yours and save the £17.50

I had a photocard when they were issued free. If i didn't travel abroad regularly i wouldn't bother with one. It's still not a compulsory requirement in the UK....yet.

Clear as mud

However a DVLA spokesperson has said that a motorist's entitlement to drive will not be affected by failure to update the photo on the licence but it will invalidate their insurance. This is because with an out of date licence their entitlement to drive legally has ended, invalidating their car insurance, beware!!
