anyone know of a 1 night stopover around newark / grantham/ stafford area(or a little farther south).
it could be a pub or layby or services, we dont mind paying but would'nt be arriving till 7pm ish.
we fancy calling at duxford museum on our way south to Austria so will set off 1 day earlier to try out the new (to us) chieftain.

If the A1 layby is full, another one near Newark popular with lorries for an overnight stop is

It's on the A46, so a little less overnight traffic than the A1 & there is a bit of an earth bank between you & the road to cut the noise. If it's full, there's one on the other carriageway as well. Doesn't matter which one you end up in, as you've got to go up & turn round in the morning anyway, even if you are in the first one.

Further south, near Peterborough, you could try Stibbington Diner.

There is another layby just north of Stibbington, formed when the A47 bypassed Wansford. It looks nice, on the banks of the river Nene, but last time I stopped to make a cup of tea on a summer's evening, I got the impression that the services on sale from the van parked up there didn't include tea! It did look as if security was provided though.

Try the Sibson Inn, use to be a CS site so they have Dump and a nice grassy area next to the bar.

It's closer to Peterborough so may be too far for you, but a good stop off.

We tried the one at wandsford and it was packed full of trucks,, we ended up going down to Peterborough services,, should be £22 but the pay machines have been broken since October ,, so the lady at wh smiths told us it was free parking... Nice result with the money we saved we had full brekkie each,,,,and they managed to only charge us for 4 brekkies rather than 5.. Nice result
