We have a speed limiter on our car, we have noticed when it's set to 30mph, those signs that flash your speed at you generally read 27 mph....so which one is wrong? Also is 30 mph the same reading on every car. You would think so these days with computers, but who knows for sure. o_O

Just hope the speed cameras and radar guns are accurate enough to make it fair.

The average speed check cameras are probably much fairer and safer.

The speedo on the car must not show a slower speed than you are actually going - but may (most?) show you are going faster than you actually are - so the flashy signs are probably more correct.

And ours is the same. The speedo shows 30 and the sign says 27.

Nope they aren't, home office approval tolerance allowed would let 1 mph be permissible tolerance, which is actually why the 10% + 2 mph rule exists.

This comes up so often, and it is simply headline grabbing. The reasons are as follows:
    1) There aren't sufficiently accurate speed detection devices around to catch speeders using zero tolerance.
    2) Any reasonably clued up solicitor would defeat a speeding charge at 1 mph over the limit.
    3) To class someone doing 71 mph in the same class as someone doing 100 mph on the motorway is farcical.

It will never happen, so I wouldn't get to het up about it, the last time we saw it, it was because a particular force wanted more money I believe!

I notice the comparison between speedo and Garmin nav which always shows 2 mph faster than speedo and beeps if I exceed the limit , a handy warning although all limits not correct.

To do that you would need to take into account tread depth, possible with sensors and electronics, but at what cost and would you be prepared to pay for it.

Hmm. My speedometer always reads around 3mph slower than my Snooper satnav and I have noticed that when I am in a 50 mph zone on the Mway and following the speedo, lorries often pass. So I'd tend to agree with what others have said about it being obligatory for the speedo to overstate your speed. As for treating 71mph the same as 100mph, I believe the latter automatically gets you banned and no wonder nowadays.

With errors in speedos, errors in speed cameras and errors in radar guns, even the most inept defence attorney would get a prosecution thrown out of court.
If they do introduce it, the 6 month pilot would soon show how unworkable it is.
Of course, the best way to avoid getting ticketed, is to drive within the speed limit anyway, a task which is completely beyond some drivers.

Just completed aa driveteck course again speeding limits are set by cchief constable area to erea 10 percent plus 9mph (42in a30)) Notts Wales is 2 percent plus 1mph speedometer is set at 3mph so if you stay with in speedo reading you will always be under the speed limits

I read a slightly different twist on this, they were going to issue speed awareness course tickets to the 1-10% over, raking in massive revenue, courses costing more than fines and hugely higher than the cost of putting on the course

Not sure where we would stand on disputing the call to the course

And from the motorcycle perspective, most modern bike speedometers show 5 MPH faster then your actual speed. This is done to remove any slight glitches from electrical speedo's. This came from a BMW mechanic.
