€61.40 !!

Months Blanc tunnel out of Italy and into France. Wife nearly had a heart attack lol.

Would be cheaper to come back through Italy vignette is only €40 for 12 months.
Which is why we always take the old road... Lovely scenery and loads of places to stop and take it in if you want to...
For the same reasons we avoid the A22 toll road too :-)

We were running late on our bikes a few years ago so thought we would use the tunnel to get to Aoste, got a shock at the price and when asked if we would be "returning this way" my wife replied not at that price.

I didn’t know we needed a vignette for Italy. We’ve been a few times and never bought one.

Yep we got caught out with that toll. Arrived at the toll booth before we realised.
Bugger -- that a lot of money to drive through a tunnel.

I feel for you brother:madder::madder:

Probably a daft question, but how easy is it to avoid expensive tunnels such as mont blanc if you don't know the area ?
Do you look for a village on the old road and set the sat nav for that ? And hope for the best.
Coming back through Italy earlier this year we were heading for st gottard tunnel and I did consider going the old road, not to avoid tolls as it was no extra on Swiss arrangement. But due to lack of forward planning didn't do the research and didn't know which turning to leave at !
Next time I'll be prepared.
OH can't navigate to our local town so no good asking for assistance.

I can set no tolls on my Garmin

No Vignette for Italy. Payment made at toll booths on the day of travel.

As said, simply put no tolls in to the satnav..
Honestly, without a satnav I would get lost in my house let alone all over Europe, but a lot of the alpine passes I do know, and have enjoyed many happy hours travelling them on the bike and in the motorhome :-)

Think that's expensive? Try it in a full-size coach; the boss went nuts and forbade any driver to go that way again. Stupid really as it avoided a three hour diversion.

Went to Croatia in 2009 with the 5'er, checked online first luckily, Frejus tunnel would have been €240 so long ago, that would have been Class 4, didn't want to risk arguing for Class 2 so used the Col de Lauteret instead.

March 1999 a fire in the tunnel killed 39 people another reason not to use it

spongy

A return is only 25% more.

OT but long tunnels are the reason why we keep a pair of single-use smoke hoods and a torch in the van. It increases our chances of making it to the nearest refuge to await rescue. Smoke inhalation accounts for the majority of fatalities, not the fire.

Looking at the tariff sheet above I see the 61.4, is for campers and the motorhome list is the next on along with the trucks at 168.5 euros.AND worse for a Tag-axle at 338euros????????Oh Please!. No way would I pay the to go to Italy. so it looks like Spain again , IF we still can, after they have settled the Brexit. I have not been over to Europe after January this year and did no renew the frequent traveller ticket on the tunnel. How much does it cost the Ventamiglia way to Italy, I suppose the only way is along Autoroutes if the old road is Restricted for size.

Tariff free routes are available, see my post earlier, drive through France use the Col du Lauteret route near Grenoble/Briancon, no vignettes, only a few small tunnels, few hairpins etc but we managed it with a 5'er.

In January ,I doubt there are many alternatives to the tunnel or the coastal route, the sound of col de anything means high and snow to me.

Stop with the moaning, we would pay €338.40. Remind me not to go that way.

We got caught out by the Mont Blanc tunnel once. To add insult to injury, there are other unavoidable tolls along the Valle d'Aosta approach route. Just don't go that way! We now generally get a Swiss vignette and get across from France to Italy, Basel to Lugano, on the A2 without stopping. Though this year we have been that way for Ancona to Greece in the Spring and right now we're on atrip which had taken us from Geneva, round most of Switzerland, into northern Italy and now into Austria. Seeking out all the high passes. Lovely stuff!

You are probably right, it was September when we used that route but from memory I think that the St Bernard or Gothard tunnel is part of the Swiss autoroute system and included in the vignette.

We went through in winter it was sunny on the French side
arrived in Italy to two feet of snow and a blizzard
Sue argued the man down at the tooll both on cost but that s several years ago

Just cross via Switzerland. Enter via Basle and pop into Italy via Como. Motorway all the way with tunnels under the cols. If you look on the map it is most direct way.

If you are over 3.5t it costs 32 Francs (may be a bit more now) to use it all for any 10 days in any 12 month period. It can be crossed easily in a day. So 1 day out and 1 day back, as long as you come back within a year. Much cheaper than French motorway tolls, let alone the additional cost of the tunnels.

We did go via Switzerland and Italian Lakes last time we went to Italy, just though wed come back different way this time, that'll teach us !!
As we were driving through Switzerland into Italy we had the Italian Job music on. (On Days Like These, Matt Munroe)

A plane crashed a few weeks ago killing hundreds, so better not fly either.

More bad news, a ship sank too.
Yes, didn’t a truck catch fire in the channel tunnel once, I remember seeing photos of it coming out ablaze on the back of the carriage,
That’s the Chunnel out!
Remember the Herald of free Enterprise??
That’s the ferry out

Unfortunately there’s risks everywhere it’s just a case of being careful and lucky

I'm just glad that I travelled all these passes & tunnels before the robbers started charging. I certainly wouldn't pay to use any these days.
